Read literally, it describes a White person who is smiling. In the most closely matching body of social-psychology work, it points to a finding that some minority-group members who suspect White people’s friendliness is motivated by a wish to avoid appearing prejudiced may read a White smile as a threat cue rather than a sign of acceptance. That finding is conditional. It concerns particular people in particular situations, not all people of color in every encounter.
Three meanings you may encounter
The phrase is used in at least three different senses. They are not interchangeable, and each rests on a different kind of source.
| Usage | What it refers to | Source and date | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Literal description | A White person who is smiling | Ordinary English usage | Nothing about meaning or motive |
| Social-psychology finding on suspicion | Some minority-group members who suspect a White person’s positivity is motivated by avoiding prejudice may experience the smile as a threat cue | Jonathan W. Kunstman, Taylor Tuscherer, Sophie Trawalter, and E. Paige Lloyd, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, first published online June 22, 2016 (volume 42, issue 9, September 2016) | Peer-reviewed findings from three studies, described here from the publicly displayed abstract; the full article is restricted access |
| Genuine versus posed smiles | How people rate perceived happiness in smiling White and Black faces, including genuine and forced smiles | American Psychological Association research summary, 2019, covering six experiments | How people judge sincerity of smiles; it does not address suspicion of motives |
| Media imagery | A 2017 Dove advertisement sequence that prompted criticism and an apology | The Washington Post, October 9, 2017 | That the ad drew criticism and that Dove apologized; it does not establish that the phrase refers to this ad |
What the 2016 study tested
The study is the source most often connected to the phrase’s social-psychology sense. Its publicly displayed abstract describes three studies. Each one asked a separate question:
- Explicit perception. Did suspicious participants openly describe White smiles as threatening?
- Automatic orientation. Did they attend automatically to smiling White targets rather than smiling Black targets?
- Detection. Could they tell White people’s genuine smiles from fake ones?
The abstract concludes that the findings provide “convergent evidence” that cues ordinarily associated with acceptance and affiliation can function as threat cues among suspicious racial minorities. The authors’ central sentence reads: “For those suspicious of Whites’ motives, Whites’ smiles may paradoxically function as threat cues.”

Why the same smile can read differently
A smile usually signals warmth. The study’s argument is that this signal depends on what the viewer believes about the smiler’s motive. If a viewer assumes the smile is a performance meant to protect the smiler’s image, the same expression can carry a different and more guarded meaning. The effect is tied to suspicion, which is why the finding should not be read as a fixed reaction to skin color.
The finding also has clear limits. It does not show that:

- all people of color respond to White smiles this way;
- any particular White person’s smile is insincere;
- how common suspicion is in any population or setting, since the abstract does not provide such a figure.
Genuine and posed smiles
A separate American Psychological Association summary covers a different question: whether people can judge happiness in faces. It describes six experiments in which participants viewed smiling White or Black faces and rated perceived happiness, with genuine and forced smiles represented. The summary defines a Duchenne smile as one with “crows’ feet around the eyes,” and a non-Duchenne smile as a false or polite smile.
This work is useful for understanding how viewers read sincerity in faces. It is not evidence that “smiling White” has a formal definition, and it does not test whether minority-group members suspect White people’s motives. Treat it as an adjacent topic, not a synonym.

The Dove advertisement
Some readers may have encountered the phrase through a 2017 Dove advertisement. According to The Washington Post report of October 9, 2017, the sequence showed a dark-skinned Black woman followed by a smiling White woman. Critics said the ad represented women of color thoughtlessly. Dove’s statement of October 7, 2017, as reproduced in that report, said: “An image we recently posted on Facebook missed the mark in representing women of color thoughtfully. We deeply regret the offense it caused.”
The controversy concerns representation in advertising. Nothing in the available reporting ties it to the study or establishes that it is the context a reader has in mind.

Reading the phrase in context
When you meet “smiling White” in an article, a conversation, or a classroom, check the following before deciding what it means:
- Is the phrase a plain description of a person, or a claim about how a group interprets smiles?
- Does the writer refer to the 2016 study, the 2019 APA summary, the 2017 Dove advertisement, or none of them?
- Is the claim about one person or a general pattern? A pattern claim needs evidence about the group, not an individual’s face.
- Does anyone state that a specific smile is fake or threatening? Without contextual evidence, that label is an inference, not a finding.
Used carefully, the phrase points to a documented idea about suspicion and perception. Used loosely, it can turn a conditional finding into a stereotype about how people of color see White people.
