The ESRB M (Mature) rating means a video game is generally suitable for ages 17 and up. It is an age-guidance category, not a content checklist. An M-rated game may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and/or strong language, but a given M-rated title may contain only some of those elements. To know what a specific game contains, read its content descriptors and, for many physical games, its rating summary.
What the M category covers
ESRB, the Entertainment Software Rating Board, uses M for games it considers generally suitable for players 17 and older. The category names four kinds of content that can appear in M-rated games: intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and strong language. The wording is “and/or.” A single M-rated game might feature only one of these, or several. Nothing in the category tells a parent how often, how graphically, or in what context those elements appear.
What an M rating does not tell you
Two misreadings come up often.
- “Mature 17+” is not the same as “Adults Only.” ESRB’s separate Adults Only (AO) category is for players 18 and older, and it covers content more extreme than M, such as prolonged intense violence, graphic sexual content, or gambling with real currency. An M game is not restricted to adults in the way an AO game is.
- M does not mean every M game has the same content. Two games carrying the same rating can differ sharply in tone and intensity. The category is a starting point for judgment.
ESRB’s rating guide also says content descriptors identify material that may have triggered a rating and/or may interest or concern parents. Descriptors are not a complete listing of everything in a game, so they work best alongside the rating summary when one exists.
How M compares with other ESRB categories
The two most useful comparison points are the suggested minimum age and the type and intensity of content described. The table below uses ESRB’s official age guidance. For content detail on the Teen category, ESRB’s guidance pages reviewed for this article do not describe a typical content range in the same detail as M and AO, so check each game’s descriptors.

| ESRB category | Suggested minimum age | Content guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Teen (T) | 13 and up | Different typical content range from M; not described in detail in the ESRB guidance reviewed. Check descriptors. |
| Mature (M) | 17 and up | May include intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and/or strong language. |
| Adults Only (AO) | 18 and up | May include prolonged intense violence, graphic sexual content, or gambling with real currency. |
If you are comparing two or more games in the same category, compare their descriptors, rating summaries, and interactive elements rather than assuming equivalent content.
How to check a specific game
- Look at the rating on the box. For a physical game, the ESRB rating symbol appears on the front and back of the packaging. Read the descriptors printed beside it and the interactive elements notice, which indicates features such as online interaction or purchases.
- Find the rating summary. ESRB assigns rating summaries to many physical games. These describe the content and context behind the rating in more detail than the category name or descriptors alone. Search the ESRB website or its rating app by title.
- Check the digital storefront. Digital games are rated through a different process (see below), and they generally do not have ESRB rating summaries. Descriptors and the rating category are the main information available.
- Confirm the current rating. Ratings attach to particular titles and releases. Use ESRB’s current title lookup before making a decision, since a listing may have changed or differ between editions.
How ESRB ratings are assigned
The process differs by distribution channel, which affects what information a parent can expect.

Physical games
Publishers complete a questionnaire about the game’s content and context. They also submit video showing typical gameplay and the most extreme content in the game. At least three trained raters review that video and recommend a category, descriptors, and interactive elements. ESRB then evaluates and confirms the recommendation and finalizes the rating summary.
Digital games and apps
Digital games and apps use a questionnaire developed by the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC). ESRB says this system can be monitored, and ratings can be adjusted when needed. Games rated through IARC do not receive ESRB rating summaries.

Downloadable content
In most cases, a game’s rating also applies to its downloadable content (DLC). DLC that exceeds the core game’s rating must be submitted separately and may receive a different rating. An M-rated base game can therefore have add-ons that carry a different rating, so check the rating of any DLC you plan to buy.
Using the rating at home
ESRB presents its ratings as one input to a family decision. Parents and caregivers make the final call about what a child plays. ESRB also recommends using the parental controls built into game consoles and other devices. These tools can manage access by rating, play time, and spending. Setting them up is what enforces household rules; the rating itself does not block a purchase or a play session.

ESRB reproduces a statement on its parent tools page attributed to the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who wrote that the rating system “does much to ensure that minors cannot purchase seriously violent games on their own, and that parents who care about the matter can readily evaluate the games their children bring home.”
