The Season 4 mid-credits scene did two things. It showed that Soldier Boy survived the Season 3 finale and was being kept on ice, and it left Homelander facing the father he had believed was dead. Its job was setup. Season 5, which has now aired and concluded the series, made Soldier Boy a central figure in the final conflict, largely because of his apparent resistance to the supe virus.
What the scene actually shows
The scene is short, and its confirmed content is narrow. Based on the TVLine interview of July 18, 2024, the scene establishes the following:

- President Calhoun leads Homelander into a restricted underground location.
- Soldier Boy is alive and held in cryogenic preservation, the state he was placed in after surviving the Season 3 finale.
- Homelander identifies him as his biological father and reacts with visible shock.
Anything beyond those three points, including what happens to Soldier Boy’s body or how he is kept, goes past what the interview coverage supports.
Kripke’s setup was intentional
Showrunner Eric Kripke signalled the return before the finale aired. In pre-finale comments to TVLine he said: “He’s probably not going to show up in the short term. But there’s a very specific reason we didn’t kill him. The series is not going to end without Soldier Boy popping up again.”

That line matters because it rules out reading the reveal as a stray fan-service tease. Kripke framed Soldier Boy’s survival as a deliberate thread the show planned to pull later. He did not say how or when, so the cameo sets up a return without showing its shape.
Homelander’s reaction is meant to stay open
Antony Starr, who plays Homelander, was direct about the limits of the moment. In the same July 18, 2024 TVLine interview he said: “I didn’t want to answer that question, because I don’t think the character knows.” He called the encounter “such a conflicted moment” and said he wanted the reaction to go no further than “Wow, what does that mean?”

- The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under Homelander's muscly thumb as he consolidates his power. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca's son, and his job as The Boys' leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they must find a way to work together and save the world before it's too late.
Because the actor declined to define the reaction, readers should separate what the scene shows from what viewers infer. The table below does that for the main readings that circulated after the finale.
| Reading | What the scene directly supports | Consistent with Starr’s stated ambiguity? | Relies on later Season 5 information? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shock at seeing a father he thought was dead | Yes. The reaction of shock is part of the confirmed scene description. | Yes | No |
| Curiosity about what Soldier Boy means for him | Partly. The scene shows a confrontation, but not what Homelander wants from it. | Yes, since Starr asked “what does that mean?” | No |
| Unresolved need for a father | Not established by the scene alone. | Only as an open possibility, not a settled one | No |
| Calculation about a powerful ally | Not established by the scene alone. | Only as an open possibility | Would need later context to test |
The strongest supported reading is the simplest one: the cameo puts Homelander’s father and the consequences of their Season 3 conflict back in front of him. The emotional motive is open.

How Season 5 used the setup
The Season 5 details below come from creator interviews, not from a scene-by-scene breakdown of the finale, so they should be read as the showrunner’s account of the season.
In a 2026 TV Insider interview about the opening episodes, Kripke said Soldier Boy’s apparent immunity to the supe virus opens a way for someone to survive it. He said acquiring that protection became a major driver of the season. This gives the Season 4 reveal a function beyond family drama: Soldier Boy’s unusual biology is tied to the stakes of the final conflict.

Amazon’s official announcement confirmed the Season 5 renewal, which is the production context for the setup above.

Kripke also described one Season 5 episode, set at Fort Harmony, as a bridge to the prequel. In a separate 2026 TV Insider interview he said: “It’s like a little bit of a teaser on Vought Rising.” He explained that the episode used Soldier Boy’s history and Vought’s early experimentation as world-building while still serving its own story.

- A private detective's female witness is murdered, he investigates the crime that leads to a corrupt politician and a crooked football team owner.
AP reported after the series finale that Vought Rising was planned for 2027 and would bring back Soldier Boy. Treat 2027 as a planned year rather than a confirmed release date, since prequel schedules can change.
What to take from the cameo
- Soldier Boy’s survival was planned, according to Kripke’s pre-finale comments.
- Homelander’s reaction was left deliberately unresolved by Starr, so no single emotional reading is canon.
- Season 5 made Soldier Boy’s apparent immunity to the supe virus central to the conflict, per Kripke’s interview.
- Soldier Boy’s Season 5 material also works as a bridge to Vought Rising, per Kripke and AP’s post-finale reporting.
Read the cameo as the opening move in a storyline the show later completed, not as a question with an answer hidden in the scene itself.
