Sanrio says its name comes from the Spanish words San Rio, which it renders as “Saint River” or “sacred river.” Founder Shintaro Tsuji connected that image to a hope for peaceful communities where people live in harmony and consideration for one another. The company’s philosophy, Minna Nakayoku, is related to that purpose but is not the literal meaning of Sanrio: Sanrio translates it as “Getting Along Together.”
What does “Sanrio” mean?
According to Sanrio founder and honorary chairman Shintaro Tsuji, the company name is derived from the Spanish words San Rio: San means “Saint,” as in San Francisco, and Rio means “River,” as in Rio de Janeiro. Sanrio therefore explains its name as “Saint River,” also rendered “sacred river.” This is the company’s account of its name’s origin, rather than an independently established etymological consensus. Sanrio’s founder’s message describes the explanation.
Tsuji says the river image reflected a wish to build a peaceful culture along riverbanks and a community whose members treat one another with harmony and consideration. Sanrio’s stated purpose was not limited to selling character goods: the founder’s account describes greeting cards, music, videos, books, and live entertainment as ways to encourage communication, friendship, and goodwill.
How is Sanrio’s philosophy different from its name?
Minna Nakayoku is Sanrio’s corporate philosophy, not a translation of “Sanrio.” The company translates the phrase as “Getting Along Together,” explaining Minna as “all of us” and Nakayoku as “friendship.”

President and CEO Tomokuni Tsuji says this philosophy has guided the company since its inception and describes Sanrio’s greatest desire as connecting people. In 2021, the company established its vision, “One World, Connecting Smiles,” which Tsuji presents as a way to put that philosophy into practice—creating smiles person by person and extending happiness further. These are Sanrio’s stated values and aspirations, not independent measurements of the brand’s social impact. The company explains them in its president’s message.
How did Sanrio’s characters become part of its story?
Sanrio’s characters give a recognizable form to the company’s emphasis on communication, gifts, and shared enjoyment. The brand’s own account presents characters and products as ways for people to connect, whether by giving a gift, sharing an interest, or enjoying entertainment together. That makes the river story and the character business parts of one company narrative: a hopeful image of community expressed through products and experiences.

Sanrio’s current corporate homepage says Hello Kitty was born in 1974 and that the company has introduced more than 450 unique characters. Those are figures from the company’s current overview, not an independently audited count. See Sanrio’s corporate homepage.
From a small contest to the Character Ranking
Sanrio’s retrospective traces the character popularity contest to a small competition in The Strawberry News in 1975–76. It says the contest resumed in 1985 after a hiatus, and that the formal Sanrio Character Ranking began in 1986. Sanrio reports that the first formal edition received 31,386 postcard votes. These dates and the vote count are the company’s figures, as reported in its 2025 history of the Character Ranking.

What does Sanrio do today?
The brand has expanded beyond physical character merchandise. In its October 7, 2026 announcement about the Sanrio Integrated Report 2026, the company describes a strategy centered on merchandise, digital content, gaming, experiences, and education. The announcement also discusses Sanrio+, the group’s shared membership service, collaborations with intellectual-property owners and other companies, and Charaforio, a creative platform intended to connect official IP owners and fans. This outlines Sanrio’s stated direction; it does not mean that every activity has the same scale or availability in every country.
For someone exploring the brand, the useful distinction is between formats, not a single definition of what it means to be a Sanrio fan. You might encounter characters through merchandise, digital content, games, live or other experiences, or educational projects. The company’s materials describe these varied formats as part of its broader effort to connect people and create smiles. For example, an October 2026 Sanrio retail feature describes a Japanese store tradition of giving a small gift with a purchase, a practice the company says began in 1975 with gold heart-shaped charms. That account describes a Japan retail tradition; it should not be assumed to apply to every Sanrio store, region, or online order. Sanrio discusses it in “More Than a Purchase: Sanrio’s Culture for Smiles”.
