In English, “manhwa” commonly means comics from Korea. It describes a comics tradition, not a specific reading format: Korean print comics are manhwa, and Korean online serials may be manhwa webtoons.
What does manhwa mean?
The Korean word 만화 (manhwa) means comics. The Korean Art Terms Dictionary lists “manhwa (cartoon)” as the recommended English rendering of 만화. In English-language use, the borrowed word usually refers to comics from Korea. Korean Art Terms Dictionary: 만화
That distinction matters: “manhwa” is not the name of one visual style, genre, or format. It can refer to printed comics as well as digital ones, and the stories and presentation vary from work to work.
What is the difference between manhwa and manga?
In common English usage, manhwa usually refers to Korean comics, manga to Japanese comics, and manhua to Chinese comics. These labels are conventions for identifying comics by cultural or linguistic origin; they are not a complete guide to a particular work’s style, genre, or format.

| Term | Common English usage | What the term tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Manhwa | Korean comics | Commonly identifies comics from Korea; may be print or digital. |
| Manga | Japanese comics | Commonly identifies comics from Japan. |
| Manhua | Chinese comics | Commonly identifies comics from China. |
| Webtoon | Online comics, often designed for vertical scrolling | Describes a digital publication and reading format, not a country of origin. |
Calling manhwa “Korean manga” can be convenient shorthand, but it is not the literal meaning of the Korean word, and the terms identify different comics traditions in English.
Is manhwa the same as a webtoon?
No. Manhwa commonly identifies comics by Korean origin; webtoon describes online comics and their distribution format. A Korean webtoon can therefore be both manhwa and a webtoon. A printed Korean comic is manhwa without being a webtoon. Conversely, a work published as a webtoon is not necessarily Korean.

The term “webtoon” combines “web” and “cartoon.” The Korean Culture and Information Service describes it as a term for comic strips serialized and distributed on the internet. Webtoons developed around screen-based reading, including vertical scrolling, rather than only the page-by-page presentation associated with print. Korean Culture and Information Service: Webtoon
How did manhwa and webtoons develop?
The Academy of Korean Studies’ Encyclopedia of Korean Culture says 만화 became standardized after earlier terms for comics and records the word in use by 1923. Its history of webtoons traces online comics to the late 1990s and notes that “webtoon” appeared in the press in 2000. It identifies Kang Full’s 2003 Daum serial Sunjeong Manhwa as an influential early long-form work using vertical scrolling. Encyclopedia of Korean Culture: 만화 · Encyclopedia of Korean Culture: 웹툰

Online publishing did not replace print as the definition of the medium. Korean comics have a print history, while webtoons refer to comics distributed online and shaped for digital reading.

No single style or subject defines all manhwa. A work may be in color or black and white, set in Korea or elsewhere, and belong to any number of genres. Those characteristics need to be established for the specific comic rather than inferred from the label. Webtoon is likewise a format, not a genre: online comics cover varied topics and styles.
