“Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya” means, in effect, “I kept walking alongside life.” In the song, the speaker describes meeting worry, loss, and changing fortune with acceptance, then trying to reach a steadier state of heart. That is a reading of Sahir Ludhianvi’s lyrics—not a documented statement of his private intent.

What the song is about

The song’s central idea is to keep moving through life rather than let anxiety or regret become all-consuming. Its speaker accepts what has come to him, tries to release what is gone, and seeks a measure of calm in both sorrow and happiness. The lyrics make that stance sound light and even playful, but they do not establish that he feels no pain.

Saregama credits the song to singer Mohammed Rafi, lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi, and music director Jaidev, and identifies it with the film Hum Dono. Saregama’s song page gives the credits and lyrics. Rekhta’s entry also attributes the text to Ludhianvi and associates it with Hum Dono (1961); it cites Kulliyat-e-Sahir Ludhianvi, page 456. Rekhta’s entry includes the Hindi text and transliteration.

What the key lines mean

“Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya”

The speaker says he continued alongside life, adapting as it went on. The phrase suggests persistence without insisting that life is always easy or fair.

“Har fikr ko dhuein mein udata chala gaya”

He pictures sending every worry away in smoke. It is a metaphor for letting anxious thoughts go, not literal advice to smoke. The image gives his response a breezy, almost carefree quality.

“Barbadiyon ka sog manana fizool tha / Barbadiyon ka jashn manata chala gaya”

The speaker says mourning every ruin was futile, then turns the thought on its head: he went on celebrating the ruins. That reversal makes acceptance active rather than resigned. It does not mean that losses never hurt or that every loss should be treated as a blessing.

“Jo mil gaya usi ko muqaddar samajh liya / Jo kho gaya main usko bhulata chala gaya”

He treats what he received as fate and tries to forget what he lost. Read together, the lines pair acceptance of what cannot be changed with an effort to stop living in the past. Forgetting is the speaker’s chosen posture here, not a rule that everyone must follow.

“Gham aur khushi mein fark na mehsoos ho jahaan / Main dil ko us maqam pe laata chala gaya”

He tries to bring his heart to a place where grief and happiness do not pull him so sharply in opposite directions. This is best understood as a pursuit of equanimity—emotional steadiness—not proof that he has become numb. The English translation and commentary at New Sense offer another interpretive reading; neither that translation nor this close reading is a statement by Ludhianvi about his intended meaning.

How to picture the song’s outlook

Imagine someone encountering setbacks without letting them define the whole of life. The song’s speaker is not necessarily untouched by hardship; instead, he describes a deliberate way of responding to it. He accepts what has arrived, loosens his hold on what has disappeared, and tries to steady his heart through both extremes of feeling. The smoke and celebration images dramatize that attitude, rather than offering a literal prescription.
