What Does It Take to Climb K2 in Winter? The Risks and Challenges Explained

K2’s first winter summit came in 2021 after an exceptional team climb in unusually favorable weather. The ascent did not make winter conditions reliably safe.

Climbing K2 in winter takes far more than endurance: it demands elite high-altitude skill, extensive route preparation, a coordinated team, and a rare weather window. K2 rises to 8,611 meters, and the first successful winter ascent came on January 16, 2021, when ten Nepali climbers reached the summit together. Their achievement was extraordinary, but the season’s deaths and disappearances—and the unusually favorable conditions during the summit push described in a peer-reviewed weather analysis published in 2022—make clear that it was not proof that winter K2 is reliably manageable.

Has anyone climbed K2 in winter?

Yes. On January 16, 2021, ten Nepali climbers became the first team to summit K2 in winter. They climbed the Abruzzi Spur, with a small variation above Camp 3, and reached the top together. The American Alpine Club’s American Alpine Journal account says all ten began summit day from Camp 3, at approximately 7,350 meters, using new or existing fixed ropes along the route. Read the expedition account.

The climbers belonged to three separate expeditions that joined forces. They agreed to summit together, and the account emphasizes the coordination and shared effort behind the climb. Expedition co-leader Mingma Gyalje Sherpa later wrote, “When we unite, nothing is impossible, and that is the way it was on K2.” The quote captures the team’s solidarity, not a repeatable formula for making the mountain safe.

Before that success, winter attempts had a long history without a summit. The UIAA notes that no group had previously climbed above 7,650 meters since the first winter attempt in 1987–88. The American Alpine Journal counts six further cold-season attempts before 2020–21, while distinguishing the broader “cold season” from strict calendar winter. Those different definitions matter: a count of winter attempts depends on which dates qualify.

This is why the 2021 achievement is best described precisely: it was the first successful summit in strict winter, not evidence that previous teams lacked ability or that the challenge had become routine. The historical record shows how long the summit remained unreached in winter, but the sources reviewed do not provide a single current, reliable total of all attempts under one consistent definition.

What makes K2 so dangerous in winter?

Extreme altitude and hypoxia

K2’s summit is above 8,000 meters, a threshold used in the cited research to define the “Death Zone.” At that altitude, low oxygen availability and low air pressure place severe strain on the body and threaten human survival. The challenge is not simply reaching a high point; climbers must function and make decisions while exposed to conditions that sharply limit the margin for error. The Frontiers in Physiology study examines environmental conditions associated with successful extreme-altitude ascents.

Cold, wind, and low pressure

Winter compounds the altitude hazard with cold, strong winds, and low pressure. The Frontiers study reports an average extreme temperature of −40 ± 0°C for winter K2 in its analysis of successful ascents. That is a research statistic for the study’s dataset—not a forecast for every expedition, a summit-day temperature guarantee, or a safe planning value. Conditions vary, and a single average cannot tell a climber what the weather will be on a particular attempt.

The distinction between a study statistic and a forecast is important. The figure describes an average extreme temperature associated with successful ascents in the study’s analysis; it does not mean every winter day on K2 is exactly −40°C, nor does it establish a temperature threshold at which an attempt is safe. Actual conditions on a specific route and day cannot be inferred from that average alone.

Technical climbing and exposure

The 2021 team used fixed ropes on the Abruzzi Spur. That documents how the climbers protected and equipped their route; it does not mean the route is easy or that fixed lines remove its technical and environmental dangers. Climbers still have to move through exposed terrain at extreme altitude, manage equipment and rope systems, and remain capable of turning around when conditions or a person’s condition deteriorates.

Fixed ropes are part of the route-preparation picture, not a substitute for climbing ability. The report says the 2021 team used both new and existing lines, but it does not provide a universal equipment list or suggest that a particular rope system makes winter K2 accessible. A narrow practical takeaway is that rope preparation and route coordination mattered to this expedition; it would be misleading to reduce the ascent to buying equipment or following a simple checklist.

Weather that can change the outcome

A peer-reviewed analysis of the January 2021 ascent found that an upper-level ridge brought relatively low winds, higher temperatures, and higher air pressure than are characteristic of winter. The authors concluded that elite climbing ability aligned with an opportune weather window. Their paper’s conclusion is direct: “Extraordinary ability in the climbing team aligning with opportune weather therefore explains how this last great challenge in extreme-altitude mountaineering was overcome.” The weather analysis appeared in the Royal Meteorological Society’s journal Weather in 2022.

This finding is central to interpreting the first ascent. It shows that the 2021 success depended not only on the climbers’ capabilities and preparation but also on conditions that were unusually favorable relative to typical winter weather. It does not establish that such a window will recur on a predictable schedule.

In other words, the summit result cannot be separated from the weather context. The 2022 peer-reviewed weather analysis does not say winter K2 was benign; it says conditions during that particular push were comparatively favorable in important ways. A team can prepare, coordinate, and possess exceptional ability without being able to guarantee that a suitable window will appear. That combination of human capability and uncertain conditions is part of what makes the climb so consequential.

How did the 2021 team handle oxygen?

On summit day, nine of the ten climbers used supplemental oxygen. Nirmal Purja was the only member reported to reach the summit without it, according to the expedition account. This is a record of what that team did on that climb, not a general recommendation about oxygen use or evidence that the same approach is suitable for another climber or expedition.

Oxygen use is only one part of the logistical picture. The team’s summit push began from approximately 7,350 meters, and the climbers had prepared the Abruzzi Spur with fixed ropes. Their ascent also involved three expeditions working together. These details describe the conditions and organization of the 2021 climb; they should not be mistaken for a complete set of instructions for attempting K2.

The contrast within the team is notable but should be kept in proportion: one climber summited without supplemental oxygen, while the other nine used it on summit day. The sources document that choice; they do not compare the climbers’ overall strategies or establish a best practice for future attempts. Nor does one person’s oxygen-free summit show that supplemental oxygen is unnecessary for others. It is a fact about Nirmal Purja’s ascent, not a general measure of what another climber can safely do.

What happened during the first-success winter season?

The 2020–21 season included fatal accidents and climbers who disappeared, even though the first winter summit was achieved. UIAA reports that Spanish climber Sergi Mingote died after a fall while descending from Camp 1 to Base Camp on January 16, 2021. The American Alpine Journal also reports that Bulgarian climber Atanas Skatov died in a fall on February 5.

On February 5, Muhammad Ali Sadpara, Sajid Ali Sadpara, Juan Pablo Mohr, and John Snorri Sigurjónsson began a push from Camp 3. Sajid descended after his oxygen regulator failed. The other three did not return, and search efforts found no evidence of them. Their disappearance is a distinct tragedy from the earlier summit success, and it underscores why a summit in one expedition cannot be treated as evidence that conditions are safe for everyone on the mountain.

The season’s events also show that “the first winter summit” and “a safe winter season” are not interchangeable descriptions. The summit team achieved a historic goal; elsewhere in the same season, climbers died in falls and three climbers were lost after a later push. These reports document specific tragedies, not a complete statistical account of every person who attempted the mountain.

The available sources do not establish a current, comparable winter K2 fatality rate or a reliable total count of all winter attempts. A mortality ratio would depend on clearly defined populations and counting methods, which these sources do not provide. It would therefore be misleading to turn the documented events of one season into a numerical estimate of an individual climber’s odds.

What did the ascent mean for Himalayan climbers?

Columbia University’s GlacierHub coverage places the all-Nepali team’s achievement in the context of the under-recognition of Indigenous Himalayan climbers and the risks borne by high-altitude workers. The article reports that the 2021 team fixed its own lines and used its own ropes. This framing is GlacierHub’s contextual analysis, distinct from the expedition account’s description of the climb. Read the GlacierHub coverage.

The UIAA’s president, Peter Muir, praised the achievement: “It is an outstanding achievement, and all mountaineers are very proud of you,” the UIAA reported. Recognition of the summit should also keep the climbers’ expertise and the risks they undertook in view, rather than reducing the ascent to a single record.

The GlacierHub perspective adds an important human context to the expedition facts. The ten summiters were Nepali, and the coverage highlights the expertise of Himalayan climbers in a field where their contributions have often received less recognition. Its report that the team fixed its own lines and used its own ropes should be attributed to that coverage; it is not a claim made in the same terms by the expedition account. Keeping the sources distinct preserves both the historical record and the context around who carried out the work.

Can the 2021 climb be compared with other winter ascents?

The available sources do not provide a like-for-like comparison of winter K2 routes or plans, and they do not establish a current ranking of K2 against other 8,000-meter peaks. A meaningful comparison would need clearly scoped factors: altitude, season, typical wind and temperature, route demands, oxygen use, and the quality and limits of the attempt and fatality data. Without comparable evidence across those factors, broad claims such as “the most dangerous” or a precise ranking would go beyond what the cited sources support.

Even comparisons between “winter” and “cold-season” attempts need care. The American Alpine Journal uses the broader cold-season framing for earlier attempts, while UIAA notes the history of the first winter attempt in 1987–88. The exact dates included affect the count, so attempt totals should not be presented without explaining the definition being used. The clearest supported benchmark remains the specific one: no team had reached above 7,650 meters in winter after the first attempt until the 2021 summit, according to UIAA.

What the 2021 ascent does—and does not—show

  • It establishes a first: ten Nepali climbers reached K2’s 8,611-meter summit together on January 16, 2021, via the Abruzzi Spur.
  • It documents a team approach: three expeditions joined forces, the climbers used fixed ropes, and nine used supplemental oxygen on summit day.
  • It shows conditions mattered: peer-reviewed analysis identified unusually favorable weather compared with characteristic winter conditions.
  • It does not establish a safe recipe: the account is a record of one exceptional ascent, not a guarantee that another team can reproduce it or that winter conditions are generally manageable.
  • It does not supply a universal risk percentage: the sources do not support a current, comparable winter fatality rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes K2 so dangerous in winter?

The danger comes from several hazards acting together: K2’s summit is above 8,000 meters, where the cited research describes Death Zone conditions, and winter adds cold, wind, and low pressure. The route also involves exposed technical climbing. In January 2021, a rare window of comparatively lower winds, higher temperatures, and higher pressure helped align with the team’s exceptional ability; that does not make such conditions predictable.

How cold is K2 in winter?

A Frontiers in Physiology study reported an average extreme temperature of −40 ± 0°C for winter K2 in its analysis of successful ascents. It is a statistic from that study, not a forecast for a particular day or a temperature that every attempt will experience.

Did the first winter K2 climbers use supplemental oxygen?

Yes. The expedition account reports that nine of the ten climbers used supplemental oxygen on summit day. Nirmal Purja was the only member reported to summit without it. Those are the documented choices of the 2021 team, not advice for other climbers.

How many people have climbed K2 in winter, and what are the odds of dying?

The first successful winter summit was made by ten Nepali climbers on January 16, 2021. The sources reviewed do not establish a reliable current count of all winter attempts or a directly comparable winter fatality rate, so they do not support a sound numerical estimate of an individual climber’s odds.

How much does it cost to climb K2 in winter?

The cited sources do not provide expedition costs, fees, or a budget breakdown. They document the 2021 team’s route, fixed ropes, coordination, and oxygen use, but those details are not enough to calculate the cost of a winter attempt.

The Bottom Line

K2’s first winter summit was achieved by ten Nepali climbers in January 2021 through exceptional skill, preparation, teamwork, and an unusually favorable weather window. The season’s deaths and disappearances are a stark reminder that one historic success does not make winter K2 reliably manageable or provide a safe formula for future attempts.
