E-girl is internet slang for a girl or woman associated with an online persona or a recognizable alternative style. It can be a self-chosen aesthetic label, but it can also be used as a dismissive, gendered insult. It does not simply mean “a girl who plays video games.”
What does “e-girl” mean?
The “e” points to the internet: the term is used for a girl or woman with an online-facing persona, or for someone associated with a particular alternative style. The meaning is informal rather than fixed. A 2020 entry in the Woordenboek van Populair Taalgebruik describes the term in terms of a conspicuous look and online persona, and notes that it can be used positively or insultingly.
Gaming is part of the term’s reported history, but being a gamer is not what qualifies someone as an e-girl. Nor does the label reliably tell you a person’s interests, character, or reasons for posting online.
Is “e-girl” an insult?
It depends on who uses it, about whom, and in what tone. Someone may use “e-girl” for herself as an aesthetic or online identity. Applied to someone else dismissively, it can reduce her to a stereotype or imply that her online presence is performative. The term has also been used in gendered ways around women’s participation in gaming and streaming.

A 2022 peer-reviewed study examines how women’s gaming and streaming labor is judged in e-girl streaming culture. A 2024 Le Monde feature also describes harassment in online creator and gaming spaces. That context does not make every use of the label abusive; it does mean the label can carry baggage beyond a description of appearance.
What style is associated with an e-girl?
Descriptions often connect the aesthetic with striking makeup or hair, alternative clothing, and influences from scenes such as emo, goth, gaming, skate, K-pop, cosplay, and anime. These are associations, not a uniform set of requirements. There is no single hairstyle, makeup detail, platform, or hobby that defines everyone described as an e-girl.
The look has been described as a mix of online and pop-culture influences rather than a formal category. Calling someone an e-girl based only on a particular outfit or makeup choice can therefore be misleading.
Where did the term come from?
The exact origin is not established. Accounts place earlier use in gaming and online communities during the 2010s, including derogatory use, and describe broader visibility for the e-girl and e-boy aesthetic on TikTok around 2019. Know Your Meme’s 2023 guide presents that broad timeline, while Le Monde’s 2024 feature describes the shift from earlier gaming-community usage toward adoption as an aesthetic. This is a reported progression, not a proven single origin story.

How should you use the term?
- If someone uses “e-girl” for herself, treat it as her chosen description rather than assuming it explains her personality or interests.
- If you are describing another person, consider whether the label is relevant and welcome. A neutral description of their actual style or online work may be clearer.
- Do not use “e-girl” as shorthand for all women who game, stream, or post online. Those activities do not make someone part of one type.
Is an e-girl the same as an e-boy?
“E-girl” and “e-boy” are paired internet slang and aesthetic labels. That comparison does not establish a formal taxonomy, and neither term has one universal definition.
