On TikTok, to “crash out” means to lose emotional control or react recklessly, usually in anger or distress. The noun “crashout” names either the outburst itself or a person who tends to erupt this way. How heavy the phrase is depends almost entirely on context. Often it is a joke about a minor annoyance. Occasionally it describes behavior with real consequences, and the wording alone does not tell you which one you are reading.
What the verb and the noun mean
As a verb, “crash out” describes the act. “I’m about to crash out” means the speaker feels close to losing control or reacting rashly. “Crashing out” describes the action in progress. As a noun, “crashout” can refer to a single outburst (“that was a full crashout”) or to a person seen as reckless and volatile (“he’s a crashout”).
Dictionary.com’s slang entry, current to July 27, 2026, defines the noun as either an outburst or an emotionally reactive person. Wiktionary records the same two ideas in slightly different words: a reckless individual, and an instance of uncontrollable anger or upset. Both dictionaries describe informal usage, not a formal legal or clinical term.
Phrases such as “don’t crash out over this” follow the same pattern. They are everyday paraphrases of the verb, not quotations from a particular source.

How severe the phrase is
The expression covers a wide range. Dictionary.com notes that it is often used humorously for minor frustrations. Know Your Meme’s explainer, dated March 15, 2024, describes more serious contexts in which the behavior has heavy consequences. Read the three situations below as points on one scale rather than as separate words.
| Typical context | Tone | What the phrase is doing |
|---|---|---|
| A small annoyance, such as a ruined outfit or a spilled snack | Playful exaggeration | Inflating a small frustration for comic effect |
| A skit about a volatile person picking a fight or causing a scene | Comic, often an observation about other people | Labeling a recognizable type of behavior |
| Real reckless or self-damaging conduct | Serious, sometimes alarming | Describing an episode that can harm the person’s future |
Do not infer severity from the phrase alone. The caption, the video’s situation, and the creator’s tone do most of the work.

Linguistic roots
Dictionary.com states that the modern expression originated in African American Vernacular English (AAVE), and adds that “its precise beginnings are difficult to establish, though online examples date to 2013.” The 2013 date marks the earliest online examples the entry identifies. It is not proof of the first spoken use.

TikTok and the 2024 trend
Know Your Meme reports that Atlanta rapper Baby Kia’s “OD CRASHIN” went viral in March 2024 and inspired a TikTok trend. The same explainer says Black creators have criticized the expression’s mainstream uptake as “gentrified.” That is the explainer’s description of creator criticism, not a consensus among Black creators or TikTok users as a whole. Dictionary.com says TikTok widened the audience in the early 2020s, particularly through skits about volatile people.
Mainstream recognition
Dictionary.com reports that “crash out” was a runner-up for the American Dialect Society’s 2024 Word of the Year, and that it was included among new words in American Speech in 2025. Both claims are reported through Dictionary.com in 2026 and should be checked against those organizations’ own announcements if you need a formal citation.
What remains unsettled
No available source establishes one definitive first use, a precise birthplace, or a single person who coined the phrase. Statements linking it to Baton Rouge or to any artist’s role describe popularization and context, not verified origin.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

When you encounter the phrase, check these points in order:
- Who is doing it. A creator describing their own frustration is usually joking. A skit character who starts a fight is usually a comic type.
- What actually happened. If the post describes a trivial loss, the phrase is almost always hyperbole.
- Whether anyone was hurt. Physical danger, damage to a job or relationship, or a self-destructive act moves the phrase toward its stronger sense.
- Tone markers. Laughing emojis, exaggerated captions, and comedic framing signal a joke. Flat, unsmiling language signals the opposite.
The separate sense: falling asleep from exhaustion
“Crash out” also has an ordinary meaning unrelated to emotion: to fall asleep suddenly from exhaustion. Wiktionary records this sense separately. Context usually settles it. “I’m going to crash out early tonight” is about sleep, while “I’m about to crash out over this email” is about emotional reaction.
