“Bae” usually means a romantic partner, sweetheart, or someone a person is especially fond of. It is informal and familiar, and the popular explanation “before anyone else” is a later backronym—not the established origin of the word.
What does “bae” mean?
Most often, “bae” is an affectionate slang term for a boyfriend, girlfriend, or other romantic partner. It can also refer more broadly to a person or thing someone cares about or particularly likes. Dictionary definitions describe the romantic sense as a term for a significant other, sweetheart, or lover: Dictionary.com’s definition of “bae” and Merriam-Webster’s definition.
For example, someone might say, “I’m going to the movies with my bae,” meaning their partner. The broader sense can apply to an adored object or favorite, too. TIME illustrated that extension in 2014 with “This sandwich is bae”; that example documents usage at the time, not how common the expression is today.
How informal or intimate is it?
“Bae” has a casual, affectionate tone. It is most likely to feel natural between people who are close and comfortable using pet names. Dictionary.com warns that addressing a stranger or casual acquaintance this way can come across as disparaging or offensive. If you are unsure whether “babe” or “boo” would be welcome, choose a neutral form of address instead.

Does “bae” stand for “before anyone else”?
“Before anyone else” is a familiar expansion, but the historical evidence reported by Dictionary.com’s account of the term points to it as a later backronym—a phrase formed after a word already exists—not its established original derivation. The article reports that the earliest Twitter evidence it found for the expansion was dated July 19, 2011, while noting that “bae” appeared in rap music and online earlier.
Dictionaries and usage accounts connect “bae” with “babe” or “baby,” but the sources do not establish a precise origin or definitive first use. It is safest to treat “before anyone else” as a popular reinterpretation, rather than a proven explanation of how the word began.

How did the word become widely known?
In July 2014, TIME reported that use had taken off in 2013 and discussed music and online circulation as part of its popularization. That is a contemporary account of the term’s rise at that time, not a measure of how often people use it now or a complete history of its use in different communities. The sources do not identify a definitive first user.
As TIME quoted computational linguist Tyler Schnoebelen, “As it gets picked up by more people, its meaning will either calcify or bleach.” The observation describes how a word’s meaning can narrow or broaden as more people use it; it does not predict a particular future for “bae.”
