What Do the Stick Figures Mean in The Blair Witch Project?

The Blair Witch stick figures are best read as threats signalling that the characters are being watched, according to production designer Ben Rock. The film leaves much unexplained.

The stick figures in The Blair Witch Project are best read as threats: crude signs telling the characters that someone is watching them. That is the meaning production designer Ben Rock gave the Stickman, and it is the most direct interpretation offered by someone who worked on the film. It is still a creator’s interpretation rather than a plot key. The film never explains every figure on screen, and the accounts from its makers explain where the imagery came from and what it was meant to convey, not one fixed answer for every appearance.

What the production designer said

Ben Rock, the production designer who created the now familiar Stickman design, gave the clearest statement of intent in a Dread Central interview published in retrospect, titled “The Blair Witch Project Then, Now, and in the Future: A Talk with Ben Rock.” He put it this way:

“To me the Stickman was a totem, and it was a threat. It was a way for a primitive mind to say, ‘We’re watching you.'”

Rock also said the figure was not explicitly male and described it as another way to make a humanoid out of four sticks. In other words, the design is a minimal human shape, and its job in his account is to signal menace rather than to represent a character.

The Blair Witch Project
  • Three film students set out into the Black Hills Forest to make a documentary on the legendary Blair Witch. Armed with a 16mm camera, a Hi8 video camera, and a DAT recorder, every step, word and sound is captured. After wandering around the Black Hills Forest, Heather, Josh, and Mike are cold, lost and hunted. Finally, one night after the last ray of light had left the forest black, they were neve

Where the hanging figure came from

Co-director Daniel Myrick, in a retrospective account, tied the visual to an image he had carried since childhood: a stick figure hanging from a tree, an idea that frightened him. He and co-director Eduardo Sánchez developed that image within the treatment for the film, which follows three students who enter Maryland woods to investigate a legendary witch.

Myrick’s account and Rock’s account answer different questions. Myrick explains why the image existed in the story’s conception. Rock explains what the designed Stickman was meant to communicate on screen. Neither one, on its own, settles what every figure means inside the film’s fiction.

Three layers of evidence

Readers often treat the makers’ comments as a single verdict. Separating them shows what each source can and cannot support.

Layer Who speaks What it establishes What it does not establish
Production origin Daniel Myrick, co-director (retrospective account) The hanging-figure image grew out of a childhood idea and was developed with Eduardo Sánchez in the film’s treatment Whether the image carries a specific in-film meaning
Designer’s stated interpretation Ben Rock, production designer (Dread Central interview) The Stickman was intended as a totem and a threat, signalling that the characters are being watched A literal, exhaustive explanation of every appearance on screen
In-film content The film itself Figures recur and are tied to the Blair Witch A definitive answer on what each figure means; the film leaves much unexplained

Two images that are easy to confuse

The hanging figures are recurring symbols associated with the Blair Witch. They are a different image from the bundle of sticks in which Heather finds teeth. An interview about the film calls out the teeth wrapped in sticks as a separate visual event, so it should not be described as simply another hanging figure.

What the film leaves open

Several questions remain unsettled by the evidence available:

  • Whether every figure carries the same function as the Stickman described by Rock.
  • Whether the figures should be read as literal supernatural activity or as a psychological and atmospheric device. The makers’ accounts do not settle this.
  • Whether the interviews, which are retrospective, reflect the makers’ intentions during production in every detail.

For readers, the safest reading is the one the film itself supports: the figures are intentional threats that the characters cannot explain, and the makers have offered one clear interpretation of them without closing the mystery.

Readers who want to check these points can compare the Rock and Myrick accounts directly with the film, paying attention to which figures are hanging and which are wrapped around the teeth, since the two images carry different weight in the story.
