The Big Bang Theory actor Kunal Nayyar said the show’s fake alcohol was usually water with food coloring or apple juice. But the available account does not identify a specific ingredient used for wine scenes, so grape juice cannot be confirmed as the answer.
What was in the show’s fake alcohol?
In a 2011 TV Guide report about his tweets during CBS’s Tweet Week, Kunal Nayyar said: “In the alcohol there is no alcohol, usually water with food coloring or apple juice.” His comment describes the show’s prop alcohol generally; it does not specify what was poured into wine glasses.
Was the wine grape juice?
The available reporting does not establish a wine-specific recipe. A grape-juice claim about Penny’s wine has circulated, but its underlying source could not be verified. The careful answer is that the glasses contained a nonalcoholic prop liquid, but the exact liquid used in a particular wine scene is not confirmed.
What do other prop anecdotes tell us?
Kaley Cuoco’s beer bottle
In 2017, Kaley Cuoco posted a photo with a beer prop and wrote that she had realized there was “only water in this ‘beer’ bottle,” as TheWrap reported. It is a specific example of water being used in a drink prop, but it does not identify what was used for wine.

Johnny Galecki’s whiskey scent cue
A separate story concerns how Johnny Galecki prepared to act drunk, not what the glasses contained. In a 2025 SlashFilm article drawing on Jessica Radloff’s 2022 oral history, Galecki said prop master Scott London soaked pieces of dish sponge in whiskey and put them in a lidded disposable coffee cup for him to smell. Galecki said the scent helped him access “sense memory” and loosen up for the performance. The sponge was an odor cue, not a drink prop.
