John Wayne Gacy was convicted in Illinois in 1980 of murdering 33 young men and boys. The investigation that exposed the killings accelerated after 15-year-old Robert Piest disappeared in December 1978. Investigators recovered 29 victims at Gacy’s home and four from rivers; as of October 4, 2026, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office says five victims remain unidentified.
What Gacy was convicted of
An Illinois jury found Gacy guilty of 33 murders. The Illinois Supreme Court’s 1984 opinion records that the aggravated-kidnapping count had been dismissed; the jury found him guilty on the other pending counts.
The FBI’s case summary describes the victims as young men aged 14 to 21. The phrase “killer clown” refers to Gacy’s public clown persona, but it should not obscure the people he killed or imply that clowning defined the crimes.
How the investigation began
Earlier conviction in Iowa
Before the Chicago-area investigation, Gacy was arrested and convicted in Waterloo, Iowa, in 1968 for sodomy involving teenage boys. The Illinois Supreme Court opinion records a ten-year sentence. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office says he was released in June 1970 and returned to the Chicago area.

Robert Piest’s disappearance
On December 11, 1978, Piest disappeared after leaving his job at a pharmacy. He had said he would speak with a contractor about a possible summer job; the court opinion says Gacy had spent much of that evening at the pharmacy. Investigators connected Gacy to Piest’s disappearance and obtained a warrant to search his home.
What investigators found
In December 1978, Gacy told investigators he had killed approximately 30 people. That was his admission, not the final count established at trial. The Illinois Supreme Court records 29 bodies recovered from the crawl space and other areas of the property, and four more from the Des Plaines and Illinois rivers. Thus, not all 33 victims were found at the house.
