It examines growing up in entertainment through Lovato’s reflections and conversations with former child performers. Lovato recalls being bullied after returning to Texas from Barney and Friends, and describes how that experience intersected with their later struggles with drugs, alcohol, and mental health.
What happened to Demi Lovato in Child Star?
In a September 19, 2024 interview with CNN about the documentary, Lovato said they were bullied at school after returning to Texas following a role on Barney and Friends. They recalled that a letter was passed around urging them to take their life, and said they did not know how to recover from the experience. These are Lovato’s recollections, not independently verified school records. CNN’s interview transcript and a Teen Vogue profile discuss the account.
What does the documentary say about bullying and drug abuse?
Lovato connects the bullying and instability of childhood fame with a difficult period in their life. In the CNN interview, they described a dark place involving bullying trauma, undiagnosed bipolar disorder, substance-use issues, and an eating disorder. Lovato also said, “I immediately went right to drugs and alcohol.” This is their retrospective account; it should not be read as an independent diagnosis or as proof that childhood fame causes addiction for other performers.
Lovato summed up one concern behind the film by saying, “Fame for a child creates instability.” The documentary uses personal experiences to examine pressures associated with growing up in the spotlight, rather than establishing that all child performers face the same harms.

Who else appears in Child Star?
The film broadens the conversation beyond Lovato with former child performers whose careers and experiences differ. Participants include Drew Barrymore, Christina Ricci, Kenan Thompson, Alyson Stoner, Raven-Symoné, and JoJo Siwa. In an ABC7 report, Stoner described her reunion conversation with Lovato as difficult, but an opportunity for clarity and reflection on growing up as a working child. Raven-Symoné’s comment, “This is a business,” underscores the film’s attention to the professional environment around young performers.
What is the film trying to explore?
Hulu’s film description frames Child Star as an exploration of growing up in the spotlight, including questions about the next generation of child actors and how the industry might move forward. Teen Vogue also reported Lovato’s hope that the film could educate parents considering entertainment careers for their children. Those are the film’s aims, not evidence that it offers a complete guide for families or a representative study of child performers.
