At the 57th NAACP Image Awards on February 28, 2026, Delroy Lindo thanked the audience for its support after a racial slur was shouted while he and Michael B. Jordan presented at the BAFTA Film Awards. He called the response to the incident “a classic case of something that could be very negative becoming very positive,” according to TheGrio’s event report.
What Delroy Lindo said at the NAACP Image Awards
Lindo took the stage in Pasadena with Sinners writer-director Ryan Coogler. In his first public comments on the BAFTA incident, he said: “I’d just like to officially say, I appreciate, we appreciate all the support and love we have been shown in the aftermath of what happened last weekend. It means a lot to us.” TheGrio reported his remarks; an official transcript was not located in the reviewed coverage.

He also described the episode as “a classic case of something that could be very negative becoming very positive.” His gratitude was directed at the support shown to him and Jordan. It did not make the slur itself less harmful.
What happened at the BAFTAs
At the BAFTA Film Awards the previous weekend, John Davidson, a campaigner with Tourette syndrome, shouted a racial slur while Lindo and Jordan were presenting an award. BAFTA apologized, describing the language as “offensive language that carries incomparable trauma and pain for so many,” and thanked the actors for their “incredible dignity and professionalism,” according to the Associated Press.

The tic, the harm, and the broadcast decisions
Tourette-related tics are involuntary
Emma McNally, CEO of Tourettes Action, told the Associated Press: “We deeply understand that these words can cause hurt but at the same time, it is vital that the public understands a fundamental truth about Tourette syndrome: tics are involuntary. They are not a reflection of a person’s beliefs, intentions, or character.” The Tourette Association of America, cited by AP, says coprolalia—a type of vocal tic involving involuntary swearing, slurs, or other socially unacceptable words or phrases—affects about 10–15% of people with Tourette syndrome. That background figure does not establish Davidson’s individual symptoms beyond the reporting about this incident.
The BBC was responsible for the version it broadcast
The BBC apologized for failing to remove the word from its delayed broadcast and iPlayer version. In April 2026, the BBC Executive Complaints Unit found that including the slur breached editorial standards: the word was “highly offensive” and had “no editorial justification,” though its broadcast was unintentional. The unit also called leaving it on iPlayer for several hours a serious mistake. ITV reported that the production team recognized and edited a separate occurrence of the word later in the ceremony.

At a BAFTA afterparty, Lindo was separately reported as saying that he and Jordan “did what we had to do” by remaining calm while presenting. He also said he wished someone from BAFTA had spoken to them afterward. The Guardian reported those comments from Vanity Fair; they were not part of Lindo’s later remarks at the NAACP Image Awards.
