How did Jimmy Kimmel react?
MEAWW describes Kimmel as laughing awkwardly, seeming momentarily at a loss for words, and answering, “That’s nice.” The account characterizes the laugh as awkward; it does not establish that Kimmel felt nervous. The word “nervously” in the original headline should therefore be read as a characterization, not a confirmed account of his emotional state.

What is known about the appearance?
The exchange is attributed to Letterman’s 2017 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, around the launch of his Netflix show and after he received the Mark Twain Prize. The account does not provide the exact episode date. Its quoted lines are reproduced by a secondary source; an official transcript or primary recording has not been verified here.
The original headline’s phrase “most important guest” is not established as a formal distinction. The source identifies Letterman as the guest in this story and supplies the surrounding context, but it does not rank him against Kimmel’s other guests.

Why the Fallon reference is easy to misread
Letterman’s line follows a broadly complimentary statement about talk-show hosts, with Fallon singled out for the punchline. The reported exchange does not explain why Letterman chose Fallon or establish a larger feud. A separate Parade account published in February 2026 reported that Fallon called his first Late Night episode in 2009—featuring Robert De Niro—his most awkward celebrity interview, saying, “I had no idea what I was doing.” That is a different anecdote, not part of Letterman’s appearance with Kimmel. Parade’s account concerns Fallon’s interview experience, not Letterman’s remark.
