David Bromstad said in HGTV’s My Lottery Dream Home: David’s Happy Ending that he had been “using substances,” realized he was in trouble, and chose to pause work on his Florida home and check himself into “some sort of program.” The special and contemporaneous coverage do not identify a substance, program, or facility.
What Bromstad said in the special
As quoted in a December 20, 2025 PEOPLE report syndicated by AOL, Bromstad described “using substances” and said, “I knew I was in trouble.” He then said: “I decided it’s time. I need to put my house on hold and I need to check myself into some sort of program.”

That is the reported wording. The account does not name the program or describe it as a particular kind of treatment. Calling it “rehab,” identifying a substance, or naming a facility would go beyond what the cited coverage establishes.
Why he said he needed help
The special’s account placed his decision amid a difficult home renovation and personal strain. A December 17, 2025 TV Insider interview describes a four-year project affected by storms and flooding, and says Bromstad paused the renovation for a year to work on himself. In that interview, he also discussed past substance abuse, childhood trauma, and mental health.

Bromstad characterized opening up as part of the experience. “In all honesty, this journey has been so healing,” he told TV Insider, adding, “It was important for me to open up about the reality of my life.” He also said, “I don’t push away the darkness. I bring it in because I know the darkness only makes my bright and shiny parts shine that much bigger.”
How the disclosure fits into the documentary
My Lottery Dream Home: David’s Happy Ending is an hour-long HGTV special about Bromstad’s own Florida home and its renovation. It premiered on December 19, 2025. Rather than a standard episode about helping a lottery winner choose a home, the special turns the renovation into a personal story, including the damage, delays, and Bromstad’s account of a difficult period.
