Dana Carvey’s impression of Michael J. Fox on Saturday Night Live surprised Fox because Carvey reproduced a specific physical habit Fox had never expected anyone to copy: he put his hands in his pockets, spun a full 360 degrees, and leapt onto a counter. Fox said he did not think he had much distinctive material for an impression, and he praised Carvey’s performance rather than objecting to it.
What Carvey did in the sketch
Fox’s account singles out physicality, not voice or catchphrases. In his telling, Fox used to perform a routine of putting his hands in his pockets, doing a 360, and leaping up onto a counter. Carvey’s version carried that movement over, and Fox said he had never imagined anyone would bother with it.

The episode and its premise
Fox hosted SNL on March 16, 1991. In the opening monologue, Carvey and David Spade appeared as versions of Fox alongside him. The bit played on the idea that the show was going badly and drew on a Back to the Future-style time-travel premise, which suited a sketch built around Fox’s best-known film character.
What Fox and Carvey said
The clearest source for Fox’s reaction is an Entertainment Weekly interview, as syndicated by Yahoo. Fox said:

“He got so into the physical thing, because I used to do a thing where I’d put my hands in my pockets, do a 360, and leap up on the counter. I never imagined that he’d do it but he got that, he totally nailed it. He really did. I love Dave a lot, but I really loved Dana’s impression.”
Fox also called the sketch “really good.” Carvey responded in the same interview:

“It was an honor and a pleasure to do my Michael J. Fox impression in front of the supremely talented Michael J. Fox on SNL. I’m so glad he enjoyed it. He ‘crushed’ that night.”
Carvey added that he still considered Spade the MJF king, so the praise ran in both directions rather than as a contest between the two impressionists.

Why “shocked” overstates the reaction
The word in the headline reflects surprise, not offence or distress. Fox’s comments are warm: he was caught off guard that the physical habit had been noticed and reproduced, and he said so with approval. Reading the story as a complaint would contradict what Fox said on the record.

- The broadcast date, March 16, 1991, and Fox’s hosting role are established by the interview’s context.
- Fox’s recollection of the hands-in-pockets, 360-degree, counter-leap habit is the central claim. A separate Geo News report repeats the same core recollection, which supports the account but does not add detail beyond it.
- The exact wording of both quotes comes from the Entertainment Weekly interview as syndicated by Yahoo. The original Entertainment Weekly page was not reviewed for this article.
- Descriptions of the full sketch beyond these recollections are limited. Viewers wanting the physical details should watch the episode itself.
The interview was published around the 40th anniversary of Back to the Future, which premiered in 1985. The timing explains why the recollection resurfaced, but it does not change what either performer said about the 1991 sketch.
