Before Imagine Dragons released Loom, Dan Reynolds confirmed that drummer Daniel Platzman did not play on the album—but declined to explain why. Platzman announced his departure from the band several weeks later. Neither statement established a specific reason for the split.
What Dan Reynolds said about Platzman and Loom
In an interview published by Rolling Stone on July 2, 2024, Andy Greene asked Reynolds whether Platzman played on the band’s upcoming album. Reynolds replied: “He doesn’t play on the record, and I can’t talk about that.”

When Greene suggested that it was not Reynolds’s story to tell, Reynolds answered: “Exactly that.” His comments confirmed Platzman’s absence from the recording and set a clear limit on what he was willing to discuss. Reynolds did not give a reason.
When Platzman announced his departure
At the time of the interview, Rolling Stone described Platzman as being on an indefinite hiatus to focus on his health. On August 21, 2024, Platzman announced that he was leaving Imagine Dragons. The Independent, reporting on his statement the next day, quoted him: “After an incredible journey of over a decade, I will be departing the amazing band that is Imagine Dragons.”

Platzman thanked fans and said he was excited to share more about projects focused on film scoring and composing. The Independent also noted that he had announced an indefinite hiatus the previous March.
What the statements establish—and what they do not
The interview and departure announcement establish that Platzman was not on Loom, that Reynolds declined to explain the situation, and that Platzman later announced he was leaving the band. They do not establish a specific cause for his departure. A reason beyond the reported hiatus should not be treated as confirmed based on these statements.

Reynolds’s comment about the tour drummer
In the same interview, Reynolds said original Imagine Dragons drummer Andrew Tolman would join the upcoming tour. He described Tolman as a longtime friend who had been on the road with the band as a drum tech and had helped behind the scenes. That was a description of the tour planned at the time of the July interview, not confirmation that Tolman had taken on a permanent role.
