In a statement reported April 20, 2026, Dakota Mortensen said he had stepped back from the public turmoil to focus on his son, Ever, and creating a stable environment for him. Mortensen also said he regretted not leaving a difficult cycle sooner and disagreed with how events had been portrayed publicly. The statement came amid competing allegations and separate criminal and protective-order proceedings; it does not establish the outcome of either case.
What did Dakota Mortensen say in April?
The Independent reported on April 20, 2026, that Mortensen had posted a statement the previous day. He described taking time away from the situation and said: “My focus now is where it should have been all along — on my son and creating a stable, healthy environment for him moving forward.”
He added: “I regret not stepping away from a difficult cycle sooner.” Mortensen also disputed the public account of events, saying: “At the same time, I don’t agree with how this situation has been portrayed publicly. It does not reflect the full context of what occurred or the impact it has had on me and my son.” He concluded, “For now, my priority is on showing up as the best father I can be for Ever.” These are Mortensen’s characterizations, not findings by a court. The Independent’s April 20 report also described the proceedings underway at that time.
How was this different from his March statement?
Mortensen made an earlier public response in March. Us Weekly reported on March 19, 2026, that after footage from a 2023 incident became public and court documents indicated he had filed a Utah protective-order petition, he said: “As anyone who has seen the video will understand, this is a deeply upsetting situation.” The report said he denied claims about him and was focused on his son’s safety; it also included a response from Paul’s representative. That March response and the April statement are separate statements made in different circumstances. Us Weekly’s March 19 report covers the earlier one.

What allegations and protective-order filings were reported?
Reports described allegations by both parties concerning incidents in 2024 and February 2026. The claims remain disputed in the cited coverage and should not be treated as established facts. TMZ reported allegations attributed to Mortensen’s petition concerning events on February 23 and 24, 2026; those are claims in a filing, not independent findings. TMZ’s report, updated March 24, describes what it attributed to the petition.
The Associated Press reported that both parties had filed protective-order petitions and described an interim temporary order. A protective-order petition is a separate court process from a prosecutor’s decision about criminal charges. The cited April reports do not establish the final disposition of the protective-order proceedings or any later custody outcome. The Associated Press report dated April 14, 2026 details the hearing and the procedural context reported then.

What did prosecutors decide?
In April 2026, the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office reportedly declined to file new criminal charges against Taylor Frankie Paul concerning the incidents it reviewed. The Associated Press also reported that prosecutors declined charges against Mortensen. Breanne Miller, a lawyer in the office’s Family Protection Unit, told AP: “Several incidents that were submitted do not rise to the level of criminal offenses. The remaining incidents lack sufficient evidence to support filing criminal charges.”
A decision not to file criminal charges is not a court finding that an allegation was false, nor does it decide a civil protective-order petition. The cited reports describe the status in March and April 2026; they do not verify the proceedings’ final status as of October 8, 2026.
