Upper Classy completes Cristela Alonzo’s three-special story about class, family and moving beyond poverty. Its political comedy, including material about ICE and immigration, grows out of Alonzo’s own experiences; it is her personal account, not a comprehensive guide to immigration policy.
What is Upper Classy about?
The hour is the final installment in a trilogy that began with Lower Classy in 2017 and continued with Middle Classy in 2022. Alonzo’s original idea, she told the Los Angeles Times, was to document how her life changed over time. Together, the specials trace her family’s movement from poverty toward greater financial stability.
“Classy” is about the class system, Alonzo says, not being fancy. She contrasts her family’s straightforward idea of making it—having enough money to pay the bills—with the expectation that success must mean continually climbing. In Upper Classy, security also means being able to attend to ordinary needs, including health and self-care.
From survival mode to basic security
Alonzo describes poverty as a condition that can keep a person focused on getting through the day: “When you grow up in poverty, you grow up in survival mode.” She connects that experience to the frustration behind the special: “I had to strike it rich to get basic necessities.” Both lines appear in the Times interview, which was lightly condensed and edited for clarity.

The material includes Alonzo’s experience of taking stock of her health and learning she had diabetes. In a 2025 Fresh Air interview, she also described herself as having Type 2 diabetes. These are details from her own account, not medical advice.
How does the special address Trump and immigration?
The Los Angeles Times reports that Alonzo taped the special in Dallas in June 2025, on No Kings Day, and that it opens with a joke about drinking room-temperature water because she hates ICE. The newspaper frames the hour as responding to the political moment. Its political material is interwoven with personal comedy, rather than presented as a policy explainer.

Alonzo has said that personal disclosure and humor let her address issues affecting people who are often discussed politically but not heard directly. She explained her decision to speak out this way: “It’s like saying that in silence you’re okay with it, and I’m not okay with it.” That is her stated approach to using her platform.
Her recollections of a mixed-status family
On Fresh Air, Alonzo recounted growing up in a mixed-status family in a south Texas border town and described fearing immigration enforcement. She recalled trying to protect her mother in public. The interview also records her saying that family members are citizens now and that her mother received a resident-alien card when Alonzo was about 10. These are Alonzo’s memories as related in the interview, not an independent account of immigration enforcement or a description of current policy.

Activism beyond the stage
Alonzo has credited activist Dolores Huerta as an influence on her activism. The Los Angeles Times reports that she organized Room Temperature comedy shows and distributed Know Your Rights cards. According to Alonzo’s account as reported by the paper, ticket proceeds and collective attendance raised “tens of thousands of dollars” for a nonprofit supporting detained immigrants; the article does not give an exact total.

The Los Angeles Times and Fresh Air reported that Upper Classy was streaming on Netflix in 2025. That does not establish availability in every country today. For more autobiographical context, Fresh Air identifies Alonzo’s 2019 book, Music to My Years: A Mixtape Memoir of Growing Up and Standing Up, as her memoir; it is a separate work, not a tie-in to the special.
