Saudi Arabia is the country most often meant by this question, but the answer needs a historical qualification: the reports describe a 2001 religious ruling concerning Pokémon, particularly its trading-card game—not verified proof of a current blanket legal ban on every Pokémon product.
What happened in Saudi Arabia?
In 2001, Saudi Arabia’s senior religious authority issued a ruling concerning Pokémon. Contemporary reporting particularly associated it with the Pokémon trading-card game. That is the historical basis for saying Pokémon was “banned” in Saudi Arabia; it is more precise to call it a religious ruling than to describe it as a confirmed nationwide legal prohibition on all Pokémon products. Arab News and TIME recount the earlier ruling.
Did Saudi Arabia ban Pokémon GO in 2016?
Pokémon GO’s 2016 release renewed attention to the older ruling. However, reporting at the time quoted a Saudi official denying that a new fatwa had been issued against Pokémon GO. The new game’s arrival in the news should not be mistaken for confirmation of a fresh ruling: The Guardian and Arab News covered the distinction.
Does Pokémon remain legally banned there?
The cited reporting does not establish the present legal force of the 2001 ruling or confirm a current nationwide ban on possessing, importing, or selling every Pokémon product. A religious ruling, government enforcement, shop availability, and a game’s official launch status are different matters. Without current primary legal or regulator sources, it would be inaccurate to claim that all Pokémon products are currently illegal in Saudi Arabia.

What about other countries?
The available evidence supports Saudi Arabia as the historical case commonly associated with the claim; it does not substantiate a list of other countries with current Pokémon bans. Pokémon’s official Asia press site announced events and activities in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand in August 2026. That demonstrates official activity in those named markets, but does not prove that every Pokémon product is unrestricted there—or establish the law in other countries. Pokémon Company Asia’s announcement is about those activities, not a country-by-country legal survey.
