Conan O’Brien’s March 15, 2026, Oscars monologue included a hypothetical Kid Rock-hosted alternative for viewers uncomfortable with political jokes and a separate punchline about British pedophiles. The transcript does not name Donald Trump in the Kid Rock joke; the Los Angeles Times interpreted it as a jab at the MAGA-associated Super Bowl halftime show. The Guardian read the British-spokesperson joke as an oblique reference to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Jeffrey Epstein.

What did Conan O’Brien say about Donald Trump?

At the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, 2026, O’Brien joked: “If that makes you uncomfortable, there’s an alternate Oscars being hosted by Kid Rock.” The line followed his warning that the ceremony might get political. In its report, the Los Angeles Times interpreted the joke as a jab at the MAGA-associated Super Bowl halftime show.

The distinction matters: the cited transcript records a joke about an alternate ceremony, but does not name Trump in that passage. It is therefore more accurate to describe the Trump connection as the Los Angeles Times’s interpretation than to say O’Brien directly named or addressed him in the joke.

What was the “at least we arrest our pedophiles” joke about?

O’Brien set up the line by referring to the first time since 2012 that there were no British acting nominees in the lead categories. He then delivered the imagined response of a British spokesperson: “Yeah, well, at least we arrest our pedophiles.” The wording is a satirical punchline, not a reference to named Americans or proof of an allegation against any individual.

The Guardian described the line as an oblique reference to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest in association with Jeffrey Epstein. That is the outlet’s interpretation of the allusion; the transcript itself does not name Mountbatten-Windsor or Epstein in the quoted punchline.

How the jokes fit the rest of the monologue

Before the ceremony, O’Brien described the host’s balancing act as trying to entertain while acknowledging the moment’s realities. The Los Angeles Times quoted him saying: “My job is to always try and hit this very, very thin line between entertaining people and also acknowledging some of the realities.”

The monologue ranged from political references to the international makeup of the film community. O’Brien said that 31 countries across six continents were represented; that number is a statement from his monologue, not an independently verified count here. He also said the ceremony celebrated “global artistry, collaboration, patience, resilience, and that rarest of qualities today, optimism.”

Near the close, he spoke of shared work and hope during “chaotic, frightening times.” The remarks placed the sharper jokes within a monologue that also acknowledged the unease of the moment and the value of international collaboration.
