Clint Eastwood’s famous poncho is most commonly identified as olive green. That identification comes from a replica seller rather than an archival costume record, so it is the best concise answer—not definitive proof of the original garment’s exact color.
Why the poncho can look different on screen
In reproduced film images, the poncho may appear gray-green or tan-brown. The Film Foundation says the film’s color correction was supervised by cinematographer Ennio Guarnieri, who used a 1965 Technicolor print as a reference. That helps explain why a particular print or reproduction matters when judging color, but it does not establish that restoration or aging caused a specific shift in the poncho’s appearance. What is known—and disputed—about the poncho
Hollywood Prop describes its Eastwood poncho as olive green and says that color matches the original. This supports the common identification, but it is a commercial seller’s claim, not independent authentication or an archival costume catalog. Hollywood Prop’s poncho listing is also not proof of any particular current marketplace inventory.
The garment’s reported origin is not settled by the sources available: The Film Foundation says the poncho was bought in Spain, while Turner Classic Movies describes it as a gift from director Sergio Leone. Neither account should be treated as established provenance. Turner Classic Movies’ film feature gives the gift account.

BFI Southbank programme notes quote production designer Carlo Simi describing the costume’s conception: “This costume came out of the original script… He is dressed like a deserter from the Confederate army.” The remark concerns the character’s overall costume concept; it does not identify the poncho’s color.
