Barney was purple, with green features such as his belly. Purple is his signature body color; green is a secondary part of the familiar design.
Why is Barney sometimes remembered as green?
The colors belong to different parts of the character’s design. The Smithsonian describes Barney as purple and green, while PBS calls him a purple dinosaur. Those descriptions make the distinction clear: purple is the direct answer to what color Barney was, and green is an additional recognizable feature.
Who is Barney?
Barney is the children’s television dinosaur associated with Barney & Friends and its home-video predecessor, Barney & the Backyard Gang. Georgia Public Broadcasting reported in 2023 that the original Barney & Friends series aired on PBS from 1992 through 2010. Georgia Public Broadcasting’s report also covered Mattel’s plans to revive the franchise.
Has Barney’s color changed in newer shows?
Warner Bros. Discovery announced that Barney’s World would premiere on Max on October 14, 2024, in North America in English. That announcement establishes the show’s premiere details, not a change to the basic answer: Barney is the purple dinosaur. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement identifies Mattel Television Studios as a co-producer.

Why was Barney made purple?
The cited Smithsonian and public-broadcasting descriptions identify Barney as purple, or purple and green, but do not explain who selected those colors or why. Without a reliable account from the character’s creators, a specific origin story for the color choice should not be treated as established fact.
What do historical Barney toys tell us about the character?
The Smithsonian documents a circa-1990 Barney “string mouth” plush made by Dakin Toys for The Lyons Group for fan-club members. It was later recalled after concern that its string mouth could pose a choking hazard. This museum record documents a historical toy; it does not establish that the item is currently available. PBS’s Barney page also lists DVDs, books, and toys among related products.
