Christina Applegate described years of food restriction and body-image distress during a May 2024 conversation with Jamie-Lynn Sigler on their MeSsy podcast. Sigler had spoken publicly about her own eating disorder much earlier: in a 2006 CNN interview, she recalled compulsive exercise and severe food restriction as a teenager, and said she sought help from her parents, a therapist and a nutritionist. Their accounts are separate personal histories, shared publicly at different times.
What Christina Applegate said about her eating disorder
Applegate discussed the experience on MeSsy, the podcast she co-hosts with Sigler, in an episode reported on May 14, 2024. She said she had never spoken publicly about the struggle before, calling the disclosure a “big deal” in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.
In the same conversation, Applegate connected her body-image concerns to growing up and to playing Kelly Bundy on Married… with Children. She said that as the character wore revealing clothes, she became increasingly focused on being thin. CNN reported that she described years of restricting food: “I just deprived myself of food for years and years and years. It was torture.” She said the struggle continued into her 30s and that the distress could return. Those are Applegate’s recollections as reported by CNN, not a current clinical assessment.
What Jamie-Lynn Sigler said about her experience
Sigler’s account is documented in a CNN interview transcript from May 29, 2006. She recalled that, as a teenager, she became compulsive about exercise and severely restricted what she ate. “I was completely, physically, and mentally addicted to the exercise, and the restricting of calories,” she said. Her description is her own retrospective account, not a diagnosis made here.
#1 Best Overall
Sigler told CNN that she eventually told her parents she had an eating disorder and wanted help. She said she saw a therapist and a nutritionist. She also explained why she chose to discuss the subject publicly: messages from young fans had prompted her to speak about what she had gone through. The interview is available in CNN’s transcript.

Where to read more of Sigler’s story
A 2026 profile says Sigler’s memoir, And So It Is…, discusses her eating disorder as well as her life with multiple sclerosis. The Week’s profile is available here. The Associated Press identifies Applegate’s memoir as You with the Sad Eyes, but its coverage does not establish how extensively that book addresses her eating disorder. The memoir details are further reading, not treatment guidance.
