“Confident phase” is royal biographer Catherine Mayer’s interpretation of Catherine, Princess of Wales—not a statement from Catherine or the Palace, and not a measured finding. In a PEOPLE report published December 17, 2025, Mayer said Catherine is increasingly able to define who she is, what she does and how much she takes on.
Who called it a “confident phase”?
The description came from royal biographer Catherine Mayer, as quoted in a PEOPLE report syndicated by Yahoo News on December 17, 2025. Mayer said: “She is in this confident phase where she is able to define who she is, what she does and how much she does.” Read the PEOPLE report via Yahoo News.
That wording is Mayer’s view. The report does not present it as Catherine’s own description or an official Palace assessment. Nor do the sources provide a confidence scale, study or clinical evaluation that would make “confident phase” an objectively measured conclusion.
What does the phrase mean?
Mayer’s explanation centers on agency: defining one’s identity, choosing which duties to undertake and setting the extent of one’s workload. It characterizes how Mayer interprets Catherine’s approach to royal life; it does not establish a specific change in private feelings or explain why such a change might have occurred.

What is Catherine’s official role?
The Royal Family identifies her as Catherine Elizabeth Middleton, the Princess of Wales. She married Prince William in 2011 and undertakes royal duties in support of the King while supporting charitable causes. The official biography also describes her early-years work. See Catherine’s Royal Family biography.
What the available information does—and doesn’t—establish
- It establishes: Mayer used the “confident phase” characterization in an interview-based PEOPLE report, and explained it in terms of Catherine defining her identity, duties and workload.
- It does not establish: that Catherine herself has adopted that phrase, that the Palace has endorsed it, or that a formal measure has confirmed a change in confidence.
