Simon’s reaction came with a personal historical parallel: her own 1975 album Playing Possum featured provocative cover art that also attracted attention.
What did Carly Simon say about the cover?
In comments reported by Exclaim! from a Rolling Stone interview, Simon said Carpenter’s image “seems tame.” She pointed to the sexual attitude of the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers cover and asked, “So I don’t know why she’s getting such flak.” Simon also said Carpenter should be proud of herself.
Simon did have one reservation: she thought Carpenter “was going over the line a little bit, touching the man’s knee” and “didn’t have to do that.” Her response was therefore broadly supportive, but not an unqualified endorsement of every detail.

Why did Simon bring up Playing Possum?
Simon had her own experience with provocative album art. The 1975 Playing Possum cover showed her on her knees wearing black lingerie and boots. She recalled that her team initially reacted positively, but that public reaction shifted after the album was released.

That history gives Simon’s assessment a personal context: she was speaking as an artist whose own cover had drawn attention, not simply judging Carpenter’s image from the outside. The available accounts do not establish a reliable numerical comparison between reactions to the two covers, separated by five decades.

- Man's Best Friend is the latest album from multi-hyphenate global popstar Sabrina Carpenter
What was controversial about Carpenter’s original image?
Carpenter announced Man’s Best Friend for release on August 29, 2025, with artwork showing her on all fours in front of a faceless man pulling her hair, as reported in Billboard’s announcement coverage. The image prompted competing readings: some viewers regarded it as cheeky or ironic, while others argued that it reinforced sexist stereotypes. Those reactions were varied; they should not be treated as a single public consensus.
Carpenter later released alternate artwork and jokingly described it as “approved by God.” The Los Angeles Times described the alternate as a black-and-white image of Carpenter leaning against a man in a suit. The same report said signed and alternate-cover physical editions were available for preorder on her website in June 2025; that dated report does not establish whether those editions are currently in stock.

How did Carpenter explain the image?
In a September 2025 NPR interview, Carpenter said she was surprised by the reaction. She described imagining “a man sort of delicately playing with my hair” and seeing “a lot of metaphors between this dog and me emotionally,” including ideas about power, dominance and submission. NPR’s interview provides her explanation of the concept, not a ruling on how every viewer should interpret it.
In a later Variety profile, Carpenter said the cover was about “how people try to control women” and feeling “emotionally yanked around” by relationships. She also acknowledged that the image meant one thing to her and many things to other people, recognizing those other interpretations as valid.

- On her anxiously awaited fifth full-length album, emails i can't send, Sabrina Carpenter showcases ultra-personal songwriting and passionate, palpable performances
What happened after the controversy?
The cover discussion did not prevent the album from reaching a wide audience. Variety reported that Man’s Best Friend debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by November 2025. Those milestones describe the album’s commercial performance; they do not measure how listeners viewed its artwork.
