Bad Boys: Ride or Die had the highest opening weekend for an R-rated film since Oppenheimer, according to June 2024 trade reports. Its estimated $56 million North American debut was a notable rebound from lower late tracking—but it did not top the previous Bad Boys film’s opening.
What was the box office feat?
The feat was category-specific: Bad Boys: Ride or Die recorded the biggest opening for an R-rated film since Oppenheimer. TheWrap reported the distinction on June 9, 2024, and Screen Daily independently described the opening as the highest R-rated debut since Oppenheimer (TheWrap; Screen Daily).

“Bad Boys 4” is a common shorthand for the film, whose release title is Bad Boys: Ride or Die. The comparison concerns opening weekends, not lifetime box office. It does not mean the film beat Oppenheimer: the reported North American opening for Ride or Die was lower.
How much did it open to?
TheWrap reported an estimated $56 million North American opening from 3,885 locations and a $104.6 million worldwide start in its June 9, 2024 coverage. These are contemporary opening-weekend estimates, not verified final box-office totals.

- The world's favorite Bad Boys are back with their iconic mix of edge-of-your seat action and outrageous comedy but this time with a twist: Miami's finest are now on the run.
For context, TheWrap reported that Oppenheimer opened to $82.4 million in North America the previous July. That made it the benchmark for the “since Oppenheimer” comparison, not a film Ride or Die surpassed.
How did it compare with the previous Bad Boys film?
Bad Boys For Life, released in January 2020, had a reported $62 million three-day opening, according to TheWrap. Ride or Die’s reported $56 million opening was below that franchise predecessor’s debut. The records therefore point in different directions: Ride or Die led the R-rated opening category since Oppenheimer, but it did not set a new franchise opening high.

| Film | Reported North American opening | Comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Oppenheimer | $82.4 million; TheWrap, 2024 report | Prior R-rated opening benchmark |
| Bad Boys: Ride or Die | $56 million from 3,885 locations; TheWrap, June 2024 report | Highest R-rated opening since Oppenheimer |
| Bad Boys For Life | $62 million over three days; TheWrap, 2024 report | Higher opening than Ride or Die |
Why was the opening notable?
TheWrap said late pre-release projections had been reduced into the low-$40-million range after earlier projections topped out around $50 million. Against that lowered expectation, the estimated $56 million opening was a stronger result than the late tracking suggested. That context explains the rebound without implying that the film beat its franchise predecessor.
TheWrap also reported, attributing the estimate to theater sources, that about 70% of tickets sold were day-of purchases. It reported that 44% of the opening-day audience was Black and 48% was under age 35. These are reported audience estimates, not independently verified figures.
