The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4 is based on Michael Connelly’s 2020 novel The Law of Innocence, the sixth book in the Mickey Haller series. Both stories put Haller on trial after a client’s body is found in his car, but the novel is source material—not a scene-by-scene guide to the Netflix season.
What happens in The Law of Innocence?
In Connelly’s novel, defense attorney Mickey Haller is pulled over by police, who find a client’s body in the trunk of his Lincoln. He is charged with murder and cannot meet the judge’s $5 million bail, a fictional plot detail described in the publisher’s synopsis.
Held at the Twin Towers Correctional Center in downtown Los Angeles, Haller decides to represent himself. He prepares his defense from jail while his team investigates who framed him and why. That team includes his half-brother, detective Harry Bosch. Haller’s efforts to expose corruption inside the jail also make him few friends there, according to Hachette’s synopsis.
Those details establish the setup and investigation, not the novel’s complete ending. This overview stays spoiler-light rather than presenting an ending the official synopses do not describe.

How does Season 4 adapt the book?
Netflix names the victim in Season 4 as Sam Scales, a former client of Haller’s. The season’s story follows Haller and his team as they try to prove his innocence and uncover Scales’s final scam, while confronting the DA’s office, the FBI, and people from Haller’s past. Netflix’s Season 4 announcement describes the case as the season’s central conflict.
The premise closely matches the novel: a client’s body is found in Haller’s Lincoln, and Haller must fight a murder charge while others investigate the case. But the show’s official Season 4 synopsis does not say that Bosch appears in the season. His role in the book is not evidence that the character is part of this screen adaptation.

Does Season 4 follow the book exactly?
No. The novel supplies the central premise, but Netflix’s account of the adaptation describes the series as open to changing characters and story arcs. As one example from Season 1, the show used Detective Griggs in a plot where Bosch was part of the novel. That example demonstrates the adaptation’s flexibility; it does not establish every change made for Season 4.
The fourth season has 10 episodes, and co-showrunner Ted Humphrey said Haller’s trial plays out across the season. In Netflix Tudum’s interview about Season 4, Humphrey said viewers learn the broad strokes of the charges and adversaries in episode one. The novel can explain the story’s foundation, but it should not be treated as an episode-by-episode preview.
