What did Bono say about Bruce Springsteen and Trump?
On the May 27, 2025, episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, Kimmel asked Bono whether he sided with Donald Trump or Bruce Springsteen. Bono paused for comic effect, then answered, “I think there’s only one Boss in America.” “The Boss” is Springsteen’s familiar nickname, so the line was a pointed public show of support for the musician. MusicRadar reported the exchange on May 29; TheWrap reported it on May 28.

What started the dispute?
Springsteen criticized Trump’s administration
At a May 14, 2025, concert in Manchester, England, Springsteen told the audience that “the America I love, the America I’ve written about that has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent and treasonous administration.” The statement criticized the Trump administration; it was not a comment about Bono. The Associated Press reported Springsteen’s remarks and the response that followed.
Trump responded with attacks and an allegation
Trump responded on social media with personal attacks on Springsteen and suggested an investigation into whether Springsteen and other celebrities’ appearances for Kamala Harris amounted to illegal campaign contributions. That was Trump’s allegation, not an established finding. Bono addressed it separately from his answer to Kimmel’s choice question.

Did Bono perform for Kamala Harris or get paid to support her?
Bono said: “U2 and I have never played a show to support any candidate from any party.” His statement is a denial that he or U2 performed a candidate-support show; the cited reporting does not establish that Bono or U2 were paid to support Harris. MusicRadar and TheWrap reported his response.
Bono also joked that he would play tambourine in a band with Springsteen, Beyoncé and Oprah, and said Truth Social was “not very true a lot of the time.” Those comments were part of the same interview, but the denial is the relevant answer to Trump’s claim.
Rank #2
Why was Bono on Jimmy Kimmel’s show?
Bono appeared in part to promote Bono: Stories of Surrender. That film-promotion context explains the appearance; the exchange about Springsteen and Trump was a separate moment in the interview, not a discussion of the film. TheWrap’s May 28 report covers both the interview context and the political remarks.

Reports from the same period cited public responses in support of Springsteen or his remarks from Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Neil Young and Tom Morello. These examples show other musicians speaking publicly; they do not establish a coordinated campaign or formal coalition. The Associated Press also reported Springsteen’s subsequent digital EP, recorded live in Manchester and released with two audience addresses.
