Bob Weir remembered Phil Lesh as the friend who broadened his musical thinking: Lesh introduced him to the John Coltrane Quartet when Weir was 17, helped shape his approach to guitar, and shared conversations about modern classical music and Igor Stravinsky. Weir’s personal tribute appeared on October 27, 2024, two days after Lesh died at age 84.
What Bob Weir said about Phil Lesh
In his individual reflection, Weir described Lesh as a musical guide and a longtime conversation partner. He traced part of his own development as a guitarist to hearing the John Coltrane Quartet after Lesh introduced him to the group. As Weir put it, “This happened because Phil turned me on to the Coltrane Quartet.” (Jambands/Relix, October 27, 2024)
Weir also credited Lesh with introducing him and the band to modern classical music. The two discussed Igor Stravinsky’s work, part of a wider intellectual exchange that Weir remembered as important to their musical relationship.
Why Weir remembered their differences
Weir did not describe their relationship as seamless. He acknowledged that they disagreed, but said those differences gave their work together more meaning: “We had our differences, of course, but it’s not platitudinous to say that that only made our work together more meaningful.” (Jambands/Relix, October 27, 2024)

How Weir’s tribute fit the Grateful Dead members’ joint statement
Weir’s reflection was published alongside a joint remembrance from Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann. The group called Lesh irreplaceable and an explorer of musical worlds, and encouraged listeners to hear the Grateful Dead’s music as a way to carry part of him forward. The joint statement offered a shared tribute; Weir’s separate words added the detail of how Lesh shaped his own musicianship and friendship. (Jambands/Relix, October 27, 2024)

Phil Lesh’s death and further ways to explore his story
Lesh died on October 25, 2024, aged 84. Pitchfork reported that the public announcement did not disclose a cause of death, so none should be inferred. (Pitchfork, 2024)
For a first-person account of Lesh’s years with the band, readers can turn to his memoir, Searching for the Sound: My Life with the Grateful Dead, which Pitchfork identifies as a book about that period. (Pitchfork, 2024) The joint tribute, meanwhile, points toward listening to the band’s music as a remembrance.
