Reports attributed a Weibo post to Feng Ji, Game Science’s CEO and the game’s director, in which he expressed disappointment and questioned the Game of the Year criteria. The English excerpts are machine translations, so their tone and nuance are uncertain.
What happened at The Game Awards 2024
Astro Bot, developed by Team Asobi, won Game of the Year, beating Black Myth: Wukong and nominees Balatro, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Metaphor: ReFantazio. Black Myth: Wukong was nominated in four categories and won Best Action Game and Players’ Voice. These are distinct results: Players’ Voice is not the Game of the Year award. Hitmarker’s report covers the awards and the response attributed to Feng Ji.
What Feng Ji reportedly said
Reports published December 15–16, 2024, attributed a Weibo post to Feng Ji, identifying him as Game Science’s CEO and the director of Black Myth: Wukong. In a machine-translated excerpt reported by PC Gamer, he wrote: “The games nominated this year were all exceptional, but honestly, I still can’t figure out what the criteria were for Game of the Year. I feel like I came all the way here for nothing!”
PC Gamer also reported another translated excerpt in which Feng Ji called the outcome “no fluke” and described it as reflecting Chinese culture, talent, the business environment, the game industry, and players worldwide coming together. That wording, too, is a translation of the reported post, not a verified English original.

How to read the translated remarks
The award results are clear; the exact tone of the post is not. PC Gamer says its rendering relied on machine translation and cautions that humor and sarcasm may not carry over. Video Games Chronicle also notes that the post was machine-translated and that its tone could be sarcastic or joking. The available reporting supports describing the remarks as expressing disappointment and asking about the selection criteria, but it does not establish whether Feng Ji intended them as bitter, disrespectful, humorous, or sarcastic.
Some coverage also mentions an unnamed employee crying, but that is separate reporting and should not be confused with Feng Ji’s own attributed remarks. The central distinction is between the documented award outcome and interpretations of an English translation of a social-media post.
