NASA astronaut Barry “Butch” Wilmore said a spacewalk outside the International Space Station left him awestruck and prompted him to ask, “How did you get here?” He understood the moment through his Christian faith. The account describes his personal interpretation, not evidence that a supernatural event occurred.
What did Barry Wilmore see during the spacewalk?
Wilmore’s experience took place in 2014, during his third spaceflight. As he worked outside the International Space Station, he rounded a corner and came across a large, reflective radiator that was no longer in use. In its surface, he saw his reflection in his spacesuit.
He lifted his visor and looked toward the station and Earth. Hawaii was passing below. Wilmore described the view as overwhelming: “It’s sensory overload, it’s mesmerizing, it’s amazing.” Seeing his reflection led him to wonder, “How did you get here?”
How did Wilmore interpret the moment?
Wilmore said he understood his presence in space in terms of his Christian faith: “I was there because the Lord in His planning purposes allowed me to be there and gave me that desire in my heart.” That is Wilmore’s account of what the moment meant to him; the reported scene and his feelings do not establish a supernatural cause.
