Austen Kroll said he was initially reluctant to discuss his older sister Kyle’s death on Southern Charm. During Season 4, he chose to tell Chelsea Meissner about the loss as their conversation turned to family and personal history. Bravo reports that Kyle died at nine after falling from a cliff on a family hike; Austen was seven. He has also described how his family began to heal after his younger sister Katie was born.
Why Austen chose to talk about Kyle on Southern Charm
Austen first spoke about Kyle’s death on camera during Season 4, in a conversation with Chelsea Meissner. In a later Bravo interview, he explained that he had been reluctant to share the story, but felt that opening up about his family was a natural next step as he and Chelsea talked about their lives. Bravo’s retrospective quotes him saying he called his mother after the conversation and wanted the story to be portrayed “in the right light.”

He also said his castmates had not known about the loss. Before sharing it, he sought his mother’s okay to talk about the family history if it felt right to him. His account centers on making a deliberate choice about what to reveal and to whom, rather than presenting the disclosure as easy.

A TV Insider article published in January 2026 gives the date as August 18, 1994, identifies Chimney Rock Park, and says a coroner’s account reported by a local newspaper estimated the fall at 150 to 200 feet. Those specifics are relayed by TV Insider from local reporting, not established here as details Austen personally supplied.
How Austen remembers the loss and his family’s healing
Austen has described experiencing the tragedy as a young child who did not yet understand death. In Bravo’s account, he recalled initially thinking Kyle had scraped her knee and would be taken to the hospital. He said, “I didn’t understand death at that time in my life.”

He has also spoken about the effect the loss had on his family. Looking back at the family’s longtime home in Charlotte, he described a painful period and connected Katie’s birth there with a gradual return to wholeness. Bravo quotes him saying that Katie’s arrival brought “new life” into the home and marked the first time the family had a chance to heal together. During Season 5, viewers met Katie as Austen discussed how the family had picked up the pieces after Kyle’s death.
