Ariana Grande said “No one has the right to say shit” during a December 2024 interview about the scrutiny she has faced over her appearance. Speaking with journalist Salima Poumbga alongside Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo, Grande objected to how casually people comment on another person’s looks, health and presentation. The remark was not a new response to the 2026 debate about her body; it was part of a conversation during the film’s press tour. Variety’s December 7, 2024 account describes the interview and its context.
What did Ariana Grande say?
Asked how she copes with beauty standards and criticism of her appearance, Grande described being scrutinized since her teenage years. She said people should not feel entitled to comment on someone else’s looks, health or presentation, and urged viewers to protect themselves from that “noise.” Her reported closing line was: “No one has the right to say shit.” ELLE’s December 2024 account includes her examples of blocking people or deleting an app if necessary.
The quote is best understood in that context: Grande was speaking about the cumulative effect of unsolicited commentary, not offering a medical explanation of her appearance or inviting speculation about her private health.
When did she make the remark?
Grande made the widely reported comment in 2024, during the Wicked press tour, in an interview with French journalist Salima Poumbga for the YouTube program Oui Oui Baguette. She was speaking with Erivo when Poumbga asked about beauty standards and criticism of her appearance. The remark was reported in December 2024 by Variety; it was not prompted by the renewed discussion reported in 2026.

What had Grande said about body comments before?
In April 2023, Grande posted a TikTok asking people to be gentler about comments on bodies. As quoted by the Los Angeles Times on April 12, 2023, she said: “I think we should be gentler and less comfortable commenting on people’s bodies, no matter what.”
In the same video, she said the version of her that some viewers compared favorably with her then-current appearance had been, for her, the unhealthiest version. That was Grande’s personal account of her own experience—not a general medical claim or advice about how to judge anyone’s health from appearance.

Why did the debate return in 2026?
An Associated Press report published August 5, 2026, described renewed discussion after the release of Grande’s Petal album and a related video. The AP account records different interpretations: some commenters saw body-shaming, others described their remarks as concern, and others emphasized privacy or the influence of celebrities. The disagreement illustrates why stated concern and actual impact are not always the same thing.
Johanna Kandel, founder and CEO of the National Alliance for Eating Disorders, told AP, “I would just check our intentions behind it. What is the purpose of it? … What is the intent versus the impact of it?” Her distinction does not settle every disagreement, but it gives people a practical question to consider before commenting.

Rachel Goldman, a psychologist and clinical assistant professor at NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine, urged people to avoid speculation about celebrities’ bodies altogether. “Public conversations about celebrity bodies often reinforce the idea that our bodies are open for public discussion, and that’s a message young people are listening to,” she told AP. Allison Butler, author of The Judgment of Gender: How Women are Centered and Silenced in Pop Culture, also noted that such scrutiny can reduce the complexity of both the people being discussed and those doing the discussing.
The AP report documents these perspectives; it does not establish Grande’s private medical condition. It is possible to discuss celebrity imagery, beauty standards and cultural influence without trying to diagnose an individual from photographs or video.

What is known about Grande’s planned break from public work?
In an August 3, 2026 report, AP said Grande had withdrawn from the planned 2027 London production of Sunday in the Park With George. AP quoted a representative as saying she would step back from public-facing work after her tour because of ongoing scrutiny. That explanation is the representative’s statement; it should not be recast as evidence of an independent medical reason. AP’s report on the withdrawal gives the dated account.

- Check the purpose. Ask whether a comment contributes to a discussion of public imagery or standards, or merely evaluates a person’s body.
- Consider the likely impact. Good intentions do not guarantee that a remark will feel respectful to the person discussed or to people reading it.
- Keep privacy separate from public influence. Critiquing beauty standards is different from claiming to know someone’s diagnosis or health from their appearance.
- Let the person set boundaries. Grande’s 2024 examples included blocking people or deleting an app to get distance from unwanted commentary.
A first-person essay by Emma Madden in The Guardian, published August 8, 2026, offers another perspective on the debate and recounts Grande’s 2013 Tumblr response to rumors as well as her 2023 TikTok. It is commentary informed by Madden’s own experience with disordered eating, not a medical assessment of Grande. Read the essay for that personal perspective.
