YouTube Jewels are virtual items viewers can buy and redeem for digital Gifts during eligible livestreams. Creators who qualify can earn Rubies when viewers send those Gifts. The terms describe three different things: Jewels are the viewer’s balance, Gifts are what they send, and Rubies are used to calculate creator earnings.
How Jewels, Gifts and Rubies work
- Buy Jewels: Eligible viewers purchase Jewels through YouTube’s website or mobile apps.
- Send a Gift: During an eligible livestream, a viewer redeems Jewels for a Gift. Look for the Gifts icon to identify streams where the feature is available.
- Earn Rubies: For creators enrolled and eligible for the program, YouTube’s current creator policy says every 2 Jewels redeemed for Gifts earns 1 Ruby. YouTube calculates creator net revenue at $0.01 per Ruby, then pays the amount with other YouTube Partner Program earnings. This is a stated calculation, not a promise of a particular income.
Gifts can appear as livestream overlays. Depending on availability, they may be static illustrations, effects that interact with the stream environment, limited-time designs or repeatable gift combos. The selection can vary by season and availability. YouTube describes Jewels as a way to show appreciation and enhance community, not as a means of paying creators or transferring monetary value directly to them. Who can buy Jewels and send Gifts?
Viewer requirements
Viewers must be signed in, at least 18, and located in a country or territory where Jewels are available. YouTube lists its website and mobile apps as purchase surfaces. Gifts can only be sent on eligible livestreams; the Gifts icon is the practical way to check whether a stream supports them. Availability and purchase options may vary by location, so consult the current policy and what YouTube shows in your account.
Creator requirements
Creators must be at least 18, be in an eligible location, participate in the YouTube Partner Program, accept and meet the Virtual Items Module requirements in YouTube Studio, and have a verified AdSense identity to earn from Gifts. Which livestreams support Gifts?
YouTube’s current help pages describe Gifts on eligible vertical and horizontal livestreams, but access can depend on rollout, device and account. A TeamYouTube announcement on April 21, 2026 said Gifts were expanding to horizontal livestreams on mobile; it said Gifts would replace Super Stickers on horizontal streams for channels with Gifts enabled, and desktop support was planned for later in 2026. Treat that announcement as rollout context rather than a guarantee of present availability: check the current app and Live Control Room for your channel and format. Gifts are not available on:
- Age-restricted videos or livestreams
- Unlisted or private streams
- Made for Kids content
- YouTube Giving fundraiser videos
- Streams where live chat or comments are turned off
Third-party streaming software can be used for supported vertical streams, but Gifts may not always appear in that software. Creators can monitor them in the YouTube mobile app or Live Control Room chat. See YouTube’s Gifts eligibility guidance.
What viewers should know before spending
Spending and balance limits
YouTube’s viewer policy, accessed October 3, 2026, sets a combined Jewels spending maximum of $2,000 USD per day and $8,000 USD per week, and a maximum available balance of 120,000 Jewels. These are platform limits, not recommended spending amounts. Jewels in an account that is deleted or terminated are invalid and cannot be transferred to another account. Confirm the current terms before purchasing because policy and availability can change.

Privacy when sending a Gift
Your username and profile photo may be publicly shown when you send a Gift, including in the livestream chat and pinned area. Consider that visibility before sending. YouTube’s viewer policy describes what may be displayed.

If Gifts are enabled for a channel, creators can turn them off in YouTube Studio. Turning the feature off removes Gifts from eligible streams; historical earnings remain reviewable in Analytics. Access and controls may differ as YouTube rolls out formats and devices, so check the Studio Earn hub and the current Gifts management help.
