Which fabrics are used for theatre curtains?
There is no single material used for every theatre curtain. A house curtain, traveler, masking leg, border, scrim, and cyclorama each serve a different visual or operational purpose. A municipal project specification, for example, calls for cotton velour for traveling, leg, and valance curtains, but polyester muslin for another curtain application. These are examples, not a universal industry standard.
Cotton velour
Cotton velour has a napped surface that gives it a plush appearance and can help absorb light. One municipal project specification requires lightweight woven cotton velour that is 100% cotton and at least 15 ounces per linear yard; that figure is specific to the project, not a general minimum for theatre curtains. Polyester velour
Polyester velour is sold in different weights and constructions. S&K’s cited specifications list Eco-Poly Velour at 22 ounces per linear yard and Opera Velour at 26 ounces per linear yard; these are product specifications, not a universal weight range or a recommendation for every use. Wool serge
Specialist theatrical-fabric catalogs offer wool serge for theatre curtain contexts. Availability alone does not establish one standard weight, construction, or application for all wool serge, so check the supplier’s specification against the curtain’s intended role. Rose Brand
Muslin and scrim
Muslin and scrim are not substitutes for heavy masking velour when opacity is the goal. The cited project document specifies plain-woven sheer muslin, and specialist catalogs list muslin and sharkstooth scrim for scenic applications. Their open or sheer qualities can support different effects; choose them for the visual result required rather than assuming all stage curtains should block light.

How should you choose a curtain fabric?
Start with the curtain’s job and the look required. Compare the actual fabric construction and finished curtain, rather than choosing by fiber name alone.
- Function and appearance: Identify whether the curtain is a house curtain, traveler, masking leg, border, scrim, or cyclorama. Decide whether it must conceal scenery, absorb light, read as plush, or allow a scenic effect.
- Physical characteristics: Compare fiber, weave or pile, weight, width, opacity, and drape. The cited examples vary in both weight and application.
- Durability and care: Ask for the maker’s cleaning instructions and any treatment or retreatment conditions for the exact fabric.
- Fire documentation: Request the relevant test report, standard edition and method, product label, and documentation for the material and finished assembly being installed.
- System needs: For a full venue installation, consider more than fabric. A municipal specification treats the curtain system as including curtains, tracks, draw-curtain machines, rigging, and support accessories.
For small projects or sampling, specialist suppliers offer theatrical velour fabric and other stage fabrics by the yard; a fabric sample can help assess color, texture, and drape. Raw-yardage listings alone do not establish that the material meets a venue’s fire or installation requirements. Are theatre curtains fire retardant?
Many theatrical fabrics are sold or specified with flame-resistance properties, but the phrase “fire retardant” by itself does not prove that a curtain is accepted for a particular venue. Fabrics may be chemically treated or inherently flame resistant, and requirements vary by jurisdiction, building use, and authority having jurisdiction.
What the NFPA 701 reference means
NFPA 701 is a test method standard, not a blanket guarantee of approval. The ANSI Webstore listing for NFPA 701-2019 says Test Method 1 applies to specified curtains and draperies up to an areal density of 700 g/m² (21 oz/yd²), with stated exceptions, including certain vinyl-coated blackout linings. Confirm the applicable standard edition and test method with the venue’s fire marshal or other authority having jurisdiction, and make sure the report matches the actual fabric and construction. Treated versus inherently flame-resistant fabric
A municipal specification allows either chemically treated or inherently flame-resistant fabric for its project, requires NFPA 701 performance, and calls for a permanent label identifying the type of flame resistance and whether cleaning or elapsed time requires retreatment. A vendor says its intrinsically flame-retardant polyester retains its properties through handling and cleaning, while its treated cotton may lose treatment and require retreatment. That is the vendor’s comparison of its products, not a rule that applies to every polyester or cotton fabric. Check the exact fabric’s label, certificate or test report, cleaning instructions, and venue requirements. No universal retreatment schedule is established across the cited sources.
