Women’s History Month has no official color scheme. The purple, white, and green often seen at March events come from the British suffrage movement, not from a designation for the month. In the United States, the National Woman’s Party used a different palette: purple, white, and gold.
Is there an official color for Women’s History Month?
No. The institutions that document the observance, including the National Women’s History Museum’s account of Women’s History Month, describe its origins and its designation but do not set a month-wide palette. Anyone who tells you purple, white, and green are the month’s official colors is repeating a popular association, not a documented rule.
Where purple, white, and green come from
The three colors are linked to the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), the militant British organization that campaigned for women’s suffrage in the early twentieth century. The National Park Service’s article on symbols of the women’s suffrage movement explains what each color was taken to mean:

These meanings are the suffragists’ own symbolic framing as presented by the Park Service, not a modern definition attached to Women’s History Month. The Library of Congress’s folklife blog on symbolism in the women’s suffrage movement covers the same broader practice of using color and objects as political messaging, which is the context in which the palette made sense to its users.

The U.S. palette: purple, white, and gold
American suffragists did not all share one palette. The National Woman’s Party used purple, white, and gold, a separate set from the British colors. The two schemes share purple and white, which is why they are often mixed up, but the third color is different, and the two groups are distinct.

The Park Service also notes that color use varied among U.S. suffrage organizations. Purple, white, and gold belonged to the National Woman’s Party specifically. It was not a palette shared by every American suffrage group, so describing it as “the” U.S. suffrage colors overstates the evidence.

How the month itself began
The colors came out of the suffrage era, but Women’s History Month developed much later. The sequence is:
- 1978: A local Women’s History Week celebration took place in Sonoma County, California.
- 1980: President Jimmy Carter proclaimed a National Women’s History Week.
- 1987: Congress designated March as Women’s History Month.
The National Women’s History Alliance states that it led the campaign that secured the 1987 designation. That account comes from the organization itself, so it is best presented as the Alliance’s own history rather than as independently verified.

How to describe the colors accurately
- Say that purple, white, and green are historically associated with British suffrage, and that they are often adopted for March events.
- Say that the National Woman’s Party used purple, white, and gold in the United States.
- Do not describe either palette as the official colors of Women’s History Month.
- Attribute the meanings (freedom and dignity, purity, hope) to the National Park Service’s description rather than presenting them as universal.
