In A24’s Backrooms, the Backrooms are a fictional maze of ordinary-looking interior spaces that seems to stretch on without end. The horror premise is that people can slip out of everyday reality and become lost there. A24’s synopsis starts with a strange doorway appearing in the basement of a furniture showroom. Where did the Backrooms come from?
The idea appeared online in 2019, when an anonymous 4chan post paired an image of a dingy, off-yellow interior with a description of accidentally “no clipping” out of reality. “Noclip” is a video-game term for moving through a solid surface as if it were not there. Director Kane Parsons says the post cannot be traced and its original poster remains unknown. A24’s interview with Parsons
Parsons has described the setting’s appeal as its mundanity and arbitrariness: it is maze-like, without an obvious moral or supernatural reason for someone to end up there. As he puts it, “It’s a maze-like world that doesn’t have an inherent point to it.” That is his account of the concept, not a rule that governs every version developed online.

In A24’s interview, Parsons says the production built sets covering 30,000 square feet and that he created them in Blender. That figure is his description of the sets, not an independently audited measurement. A24’s interview with Parsons
Is the movie based on the Backrooms wiki lore?
No: A24’s official FAQ says the film is set in the Kane Pixels universe and does not use the extended wiki lore as its basis. A24’s Backrooms FAQ
The original internet prompt inspired a wide range of fan-made interpretations, not one unified story. Parsons describes the broader community’s versions as a miscellaneous collection; his movie follows the continuity he developed through his own Backrooms videos. Familiar levels, monsters, or locations from fan wikis should not be assumed to appear in the film.

Should you watch the YouTube series first?
No. A24’s FAQ presents Parsons’s YouTube series as optional context, not a prerequisite. It recommends starting with “The Backrooms (Found Footage).” A24’s Backrooms FAQ
WIRED reports that the original nine-minute video was uploaded in 2022 and that the feature expands Parsons’s web series. Watching the series can offer more background on his interpretation, but the movie is not described as requiring that catch-up. WIRED’s report on the film
