In movies and TV, the label describes a relationship between those characters—but the examples depend on how broadly “Asian” is defined. A South Asian couple may fit a broad Asian-diaspora reading, for instance, but should not be presented as an East Asian pairing.
There is no authoritative, complete catalogue of AMBW screen relationships. The works below are selected examples, spanning a central film couple and television relationships examined in scholarship.

What does AMBW mean?
AMBW is commonly short for “Asian men and Black women.” It is used in online and cultural discussion of interracial relationships and their visibility. Because “Asian” encompasses distinct communities, it helps to name the characters’ identities rather than treating the label as one uniform category.
For the examples here, the scope includes a South Asian man where noted, alongside scholarship that discusses Black and Asian relationships without the available abstract specifying every character’s background. A list using a narrower East or Southeast Asian definition would differ.

Selected film and TV examples
| Work | What the example shows | Boundary to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| The Lovebirds (film) | A South Asian man and an African-American woman are the central couple in a story shaped by a murder mystery. The film is an example under a broad Asian-diaspora definition. The interracial romance films reference page summarizes the pairing. | This is a South Asian example, not evidence of an East Asian man/Black woman pairing. The cited reference is not a primary film source. |
| ER and Grey’s Anatomy (television) | A scholarly analysis examines Black and Asian interracial relationships in these prime-time medical dramas. It argues that tragic outcomes constrain conventional romantic closure, such as marriage and having a baby. Read the article abstract. | This is a critical case study, not a claim that every relationship in either series has the same trajectory. |
| Romeo Must Die (film) | A 2023 cultural commentary discusses the pairing of Jet Li and Aaliyah and reports that a kissing scene was cut. Read the IIAS discussion. | The reported cut scene does not, by itself, establish the finished film’s relationship as a fully developed romance. |
These examples differ in identity, prominence, and narrative treatment. The Lovebirds centers its couple; the TV article analyzes relationships through their outcomes; and the Romeo Must Die discussion highlights a boundary between a potential pairing and what the finished story actually depicts.
How to judge whether a portrayal is meaningful
A pairing’s presence alone does not show how much space a story gives it. When assessing a film or series, look at these dimensions:
Rank #2
- Identity: Is the man East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian, or from another stated community? “Asian” should not erase those distinctions.
- Story role: Is the relationship central, recurring, briefly shown, implied, or one-sided?
- Agency: Do both characters have goals and personalities beyond the romance?
- Development and outcome: Does the story allow the couple ordinary intimacy and a future, or does it end in separation or tragedy?
- Genre and framing: Is the relationship developed as romance, comedy, action-film subplot, or another kind of story? Are the characters individuals, or are they framed mainly as a demographic novelty?
These questions also help separate representation from idealization or fetishization. A 2023 IIAS discussion situates AMBW visibility in transpacific culture and social-media conversations, including debates about how such relationships are imagined and portrayed. The discussion provides cultural context, not a measure of how often AMBW couples appear on screen.
What the wider representation research can—and cannot—tell us
Other scholarship offers context for the patterns audiences notice, but it does not establish AMBW prevalence. A study of television advertising examines the recurring Asian woman–White man pairing and connects its popularization to The World of Suzie Wong. The study is about advertising conventions, not a count of AMBW couples in films or television.

A 2013 essay on Asian American television characters notes that many were shown in interracial relationships and that Asian American male protagonists were linked with non-Asian women. That essay discusses romantic representation; it likewise does not supply an AMBW screen-frequency statistic.
TIME reported that Asians played 4.8% of film roles in 2018, citing UCLA’s 2020 Hollywood Diversity Report. That figure concerns film roles broadly, not AMBW couples, and is not a current-year estimate. It should not be used to infer how often this particular pairing appears.

Why lists of AMBW movies and shows vary
Searches for recommendations often mix works that meet different definitions. A usable list should say whether it includes South Asian characters, queer relationships, animation, implied couples, brief appearances, or unreciprocated interest. Those choices affect what counts as an example; without them, two lists may appear to disagree while using different boundaries.
Available sources identify selected cases and offer ways to analyze them, but do not establish an exhaustive current inventory or an AMBW-specific prevalence rate. Nor do they establish current streaming availability for the titles discussed.
