28 Years Later places its story in a Britain still sealed off nearly three decades after the Rage Virus escaped. Survivors have built a community on an island linked to the mainland by one defended causeway, and a boy named Spike ventures beyond it. The crucial detail is that director Danny Boyle says the new film deliberately focuses on Britain rather than following the international-contagion direction hinted at by 28 Weeks Later—not that the earlier film has been formally declared non-canonical.
What happened after the last movie?
In the world of 28 Years Later, the Rage Virus remains a crisis contained within the United Kingdom. Sony’s official synopsis says nearly three decades have passed since the virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and quarantine is still ruthlessly enforced. People have adapted to living amid the infected, but the premise does not describe a return to normal life in Britain.

That setup matters because 28 Weeks Later had pointed toward the possibility of the infection spreading beyond the UK. Boyle told TIME that the new film instead makes Britain its focus, leaving its characters without an outside force expected to come to their rescue. He described the choice this way: “We wanted to do something that forced us to look at our own land rather than having the virus become an international contagion.” (TIME, June 16, 2025)
This is a statement about the creative direction of 28 Years Later. It does not, on its own, establish that 28 Weeks Later has been removed from the franchise’s canon.

How the island community changes the story
Sony’s synopsis puts the central community on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. That narrow link is more than a setting detail: it gives the settlement a controlled route in and out while emphasizing how cut off its residents are.
TIME identifies the island as Holy Island, joined to the mainland by a tidal causeway. Spike, played by Alfie Williams, is 12. His parents are Jamie and Isla, and Ralph Fiennes plays Dr. Kelson. What Spike finds beyond the causeway
Sony’s synopsis promises secrets, wonders, and horrors involving both the infected and other survivors. The journey therefore tests more than whether Spike can avoid an outbreak: the people who have lived through the crisis may pose their own dangers, and the infected are not simply unchanged remnants of the original disaster.
Boyle describes mutations among the infected, including larger, stronger Alphas that hunt in packs. He also says the filmmakers prefer “infected” to “zombies,” because these people are not undead. Why the distinction about the earlier film matters
It is tempting to read a UK-contained setting as proof that the international spread suggested in 28 Weeks Later never happened. The available statements support a narrower conclusion: Boyle says the filmmakers chose to make the new story look at Britain instead of pursuing an international-contagion plot. The official premise and his explanation establish the setting and creative focus, not a formal continuity ruling.
For background rather than plot context, TIME reported that 28 Days Later made more than $80 million worldwide against a reported $8 million budget. Those are figures for the 2002 film, not 28 Years Later. (TIME, June 16, 2025)
