In June 2024, Channing Tatum said 23 Jump Street was difficult to get made because of “a lot of bureaucracy, kind of above-the-line stuff.” He did not identify a specific executive, contract or studio decision. The franchise’s latest reported development is a different sequel: Sony’s 24 Jump Street, which Variety reported on October 1, 2026, is scheduled for 2027.
What did Channing Tatum say was holding up 23 Jump Street?
In a June 2024 interview reported by Variety, Tatum described the obstacle in broad terms: “It’s just a lot of bureaucracy, kind of above-the-line stuff. It’s really hard to get it made, and we’ve been trying to get it done.”
That is Tatum’s characterization of the difficulty, not a confirmed account of a particular dispute or formal studio decision. He did not name a responsible person or explain which specific negotiations or approvals were involved.
Did a script exist, and did Tatum want to return?
Yes. Tatum said a project had been written and called it “the best script that I’ve ever read for a third movie.” That is his assessment of the script, not an independent evaluation of it.

He also said he wanted to make the film with Jonah Hill, adding that he believed Hill wanted to do it too: “We would love to just get to go play again.” Those comments indicated interest from Tatum; they did not mean the film had been approved or was in production.
Was the Men in Black crossover the reason it stalled?
The earlier 23 Jump Street concept was associated in reporting with a crossover between the Jump Street and Men in Black franchises. Variety reported that the crossover did not come to fruition, but that does not establish it as the sole reason the proposed film remained unmade. Tatum’s 2024 explanation was broader, referring to bureaucracy and above-the-line matters rather than identifying the crossover as the cause.

Is 24 Jump Street happening?
The later reported project is titled 24 Jump Street, not 23 Jump Street. Variety reported on June 11, 2026, that the film was in development, with Rodney Rothman set to direct and co-write with Jonah Hill and Meghan Malloy. Tatum, Hill and Ice Cube were reported to be in talks to return; talks do not confirm that any actor has signed on.
On October 1, 2026, Variety reported that Sony had slated 24 Jump Street for release in 2027. That is a reported schedule, not a guarantee that the date or project will remain unchanged.
