Wet Leg’s second album, Moisturizer, keeps the band’s irreverent wit but puts more weight behind it: its brisk rhythms and dance-punk momentum give the jokes, desire and romantic misfires a sharper charge. Rob Sheffield’s Rolling Stone review finds the album most persuasive when that energy is in motion, especially on “Mangetout,” while “11:21” is the softer turn he considers less suited to the band.
A second album that moves with more force
Released July 11, 2025, Moisturizer is Wet Leg’s follow-up to their debut. Sheffield hears a confident step forward rather than a change in personality: the cheeky, off-kilter point of view remains, but a harder-driving rhythm section gives the songs a more physical, dance-punk push. His comparisons to Elastica, Franz Ferdinand and Blondie are critical reference points, not a claim that the band simply reproduces any of those acts.

That added drive matters because the album’s comedy is not detached from its music. The rhythms make its charged encounters feel immediate, whether the lyric is brazenly funny or unexpectedly earnest. Sheffield’s review is an enthusiastic critical reading of that balance, not a neutral track-by-track survey.
Where the album’s energy lands best
“Mangetout” turns the momentum into a highlight
Sheffield singles out “Mangetout” as “a damn-near perfect dance-punk summer jam.” The praise captures the album’s strongest combination: a propulsive feel and a knowingly playful sensibility that does not blunt the song’s impact.

Desire becomes comic emergency in “CPR”
On “CPR,” lust is framed as a medical crisis, with siren-like synth hooks amplifying the joke. The song makes the album’s mischievous writing feel urgent rather than merely quirky.
Romantic comedy runs through the tracklist
Sheffield points to “Catch These Fists,” “Pillow Talk,” “Jennifer’s Body,” “Liquidize” and “Davina McCall” as examples of the record’s energy and romantic-comedy sensibility. Across those moments, Wet Leg’s humor and desire share the same space: the songs can be ridiculous without becoming emotionally weightless.

The softer turn: “11:21”
“11:21” is the album’s ballad and Sheffield’s main reservation. He finds its slow-motion sensitivity less natural for Wet Leg than the faster, more mischievous material around it. That is a matter of fit, not a claim that the song fails on its own terms; it marks the clearest test of whether the album’s energy can hold when the arrangements ease back.
