Perrie Edwards said Little Mix passed on “Gabriela,” a song she loved—and that she, Jade Thirlwall and Leigh-Anne Pinnock were not the one who did. Her wording points toward Jesy Nelson, but it does not name her. The distinction matters: the available account supports an inference about Jesy’s role, not a confirmed accusation or an explanation from Jesy.
What Perrie said—and what she did not say
In remarks attributed to Edwards from a BBC Radio 1 interview, she described the song as one that “was meant to be a Little Mix song” and said the group had passed on it. The excerpt reproduced by LOS40 Chile reads:
“You know that was meant to be a Little Mix song? I was obsessed with it. And we passed on it. Well… one of us did. Not me, not JADE, not Leigh-Anne… But [KATSEYE] smash it, I’m glad they got it! But we loved that song so much.”
She explicitly excluded herself, Jade and Leigh-Anne from responsibility for passing on the track. The excerpt does not say “Jesy,” identify who made the decision, or explain why it was made. The inference that Nelson was the member in question comes from the names Edwards ruled out; it is not a direct identification in the quoted words.

Why the blame question remains unresolved
Headlines and online discussion can turn Edwards’s exclusions into a more definite claim that Nelson rejected the song. That is a stronger statement than the quote supports. A group passing on a track does not, by itself, establish who had final say or whether one person alone decided its fate.
POPline also reported Edwards discussing “Gabriela” and praising KATSEYE, but its coverage does not supply a direct statement from Nelson about the decision. No account from Nelson explaining her role or the reason for passing on the track is established by the cited reporting. So the careful answer is: Edwards’s wording implies that Nelson may have been the member who passed on it, but it does not settle her responsibility or motive.

How “Gabriela” became a KATSEYE single
KATSEYE announced the release of “Gabriela” for June 20, 2025, in a Weverse community notice that described a pop track with Latin-toned acoustic guitar. On that date, Universal Music Canada called it the second single from the group’s EP BEAUTIFUL CHAOS, then scheduled for release on June 27, 2025.
The label said the song featured KATSEYE’s first Spanish verse, delivered by Daniela, and named Andrew Watt and John Ryan as its producers. It also described the video as a telenovela homage and said Jessica Alba appears in it. Those details help explain the identity of KATSEYE’s release; they do not reveal why Little Mix passed on the song. See Universal Music Canada’s release announcement.

What “hit” means in the chart record
“Hit” can mean different things in headlines and fan conversation, so the specific chart result is more useful: the Official Charts Company records show “Gabriela” peaked at number 38 on the UK Official Singles Chart, with its first chart date on July 3, 2025. That establishes its UK chart peak, not its performance in every territory or a global ranking.
The chart result also cannot tell us what would have happened had Little Mix released the song. KATSEYE’s version, its release context and its visual presentation are not the same as a hypothetical Little Mix recording; the available figures do not support a counterfactual about which group would have done better.
