Hocus Pocus 2 separates Salem’s story about Billy Butcherson from Billy’s own account: Winifred calls him her old lover, but Billy says they shared one kiss. The sequel confirms the kiss while challenging the much larger romance and infidelity story repeated about them.
What does Hocus Pocus 2 say about Billy and Winifred?
The film presents two versions of their past. In the story Salem tells, Billy was Winifred’s lover, cheated on her with Sarah, and was killed by Winifred for it. Winifred herself calls Billy her “old lover” and describes them as soulmates because of a graveyard kiss.

Billy rejects that account when Gilbert repeats it. He says he shared one kiss with Winifred and objects to the claim that he was her boyfriend. Becca promises to set the record straight, and later tells Billy that people will know the truth.
Were Billy and Winifred really lovers?
Not in the sweeping sense Salem’s legend suggests. Billy’s correction is that there was one kiss, not the substantial romance or affair described by the story. The movie does confirm a kiss, so it does not erase every trace of attraction or affection; it disputes the inflated account built around it.

Where do Sarah’s claims fit?
Sarah adds a comic, competing version of events: she says Billy was her lover, and Winifred dismisses Sarah as “just a fling.” Their banter complicates the tale, but it does not change Billy’s explicit correction. The key distinction is between what other characters say about his past and what Billy says actually happened.
Why does the misunderstanding matter?
Billy’s objection is about his name as well as the romance. By having Becca promise to correct the story, the film frames the legend as something people have repeated, not as an uncontested account of a love affair. The exchange uses conflicting recollections for comedy while giving Billy the clear corrective reveal.
