Spoilers for season one of HBO’s IT: Welcome to Derry, including the finale, “Winter Fire.” The children restore the boundary that keeps Pennywise confined to Derry, with help from Rich’s ghost. The ending also reveals that Marge will become Richie Tozier’s mother and raises—but does not answer—the question of whether Pennywise can experience time in reverse.
How does the finale end?
General Shaw’s removal of a containment pillar has helped rouse Pennywise. To keep the creature from escaping Derry, the group must return the dagger to the boundary site and restore the cage.
During the climax, Pennywise isolates Marge and tells her she will have a son named Richie. He says Richie’s friends will bring about its death, pointing toward the future Losers Club. Dick Hallorann intervenes to delay Pennywise while the adults and children work to place the dagger. Rich’s ghost helps the children complete the task, and Pennywise is confined again for another cycle.
This is containment, not a permanent defeat: the finale does not show Pennywise destroyed.

What does Marge’s reveal mean?
Marge is the future mother of Richie Tozier, one of the Losers Club members in the films. The reveal connects the children’s fight in 1962 to the later conflict with Pennywise, and gives Richie a family link to the people who fought the creature before he was born.
The show implies that Richie is named after Rich, the boy who died defending Marge. Treat that as an implication of the story, rather than a separately established biological or historical fact.

Can Pennywise travel backward in time?
The finale raises that possibility but does not establish a complete time-travel system. After Pennywise’s warning, Marge wonders whether it could target people before the Losers Club were born. Creator Andy Muschietti described the exchange as an intentional way to plant the question and connect the show’s reverse chronology to the monster’s unusual experience of time.
Muschietti has also emphasized that Stephen King’s novel does not settle how It experiences time: “There’s something very mysterious in the book, there’s one moment of the Losers speculating about the way that It experiences time, but there’s not a single answer in the book,” he told TheWrap. “It’s all questions.”

The Television Academy describes Welcome to Derry as a prequel to the 2017 and 2019 films based on King’s novel IT. The series draws on Derry’s history from the book while adding its own interpretations. For example, the novel uses “Bob Gray” as a name It sometimes claims, but does not give a specific explanation for Gray’s connection to the clown. The show’s expansions should not be mistaken for answers the novel itself provides.
