Regretting You appeared to top the U.S./Canada box office on Sunday, November 2, 2025, with an estimated $8.1 million for the October 31–November 2 weekend. That was a provisional estimate, not the final chart: Box Office Mojo’s later reported ranking put Black Phone 2 first and Regretting You second. The “worst weekend of 2025” description likewise referred to an estimate-stage projection, not a confirmed final-year record.
What changed between the Sunday estimate and the reported chart?
On Sunday, Universal expected Black Phone 2 to finish first at an estimated $8 million. Paramount then reported an estimated $8.1 million for Regretting You. The Associated Press said Comscore followed the reported figures and placed Regretting You first in its Sunday estimate chart, while noting that Monday actuals could change the order. They did: Box Office Mojo’s later chart ranks Black Phone 2 first.

How did the reported top films perform?
Using Box Office Mojo’s reported chart for the same three-day period, these were the three leading films. “Change” is the reported change from the previous weekend; cumulative gross is domestic.

Was this definitively the worst box-office weekend of 2025?
Not on the evidence of the final chart alone. The Rotten Tomatoes article described the weekend as the year’s lowest-grossing based on its Sunday estimate of $41–43 million for the top ten. Box Office Mojo’s later year table reports $47,863,205 for the weekend’s top ten and $57,387,584 overall. Those totals differ in scope, and the available year-level data do not provide a directly comparable final top-ten total for every weekend of 2025. So “worst weekend of 2025” is best understood as the article’s estimate-stage assessment, rather than a definitive record proven by final actuals.
Why was the Halloween weekend slow?
The Associated Press reported that Halloween fell on Friday and the World Series played Friday and Saturday. Studios held back major new releases and relied in part on re-releases, including Back to the Future and KPop Demon Hunters. Comscore’s head of marketplace trends, Paul Dergarabedian, called the combination an “imperfect storm” and said studios and theaters had planned for it. He also characterized the audience as fragmented: “This was always going to be a tough weekend. The audience was truly fragmented.” Those are his explanations of the weekend’s conditions, not proof that any one factor caused the result.

In its November 2, 2025 report, The Associated Press said October ticket sales totaled $443 million, making October 2025 the lowest-grossing October since 1998 when pandemic-affected October 2020 is excluded. AP compared the figure with $455.5 million in October 1998.
