The five-part Hindi documentary is also read by Scroll.in critic Nandini Ramnath as a portrait of the sexism and marriage pressure shaping how women see themselves—though, in her view, the series does not probe those larger questions as deeply as it could.
What is Wedding.con about?
Released in 2023, Wedding.con is a five-episode Hindi true-crime documentary about women who sought marriage and were financially and emotionally exploited by men posing as someone they were not on popular online platforms. Tanuja Chandra directed the series, and BBC Studios India Production made it for Prime Video. The Prime Video listing describes the cases as stories of deception through online matchmaking.
The focus is on five individual experiences, not a survey of matrimonial fraud. The series offers no basis for estimating how common such scams are or for drawing conclusions about which women are most likely to be targeted. Its subjects are presented as victims of deception and exploitation; education, age, or background should not be treated as protection against manipulation.
How does the series connect fraud with marriage pressure?
In her 29 December 2023 review for Scroll.in, Nandini Ramnath argues that the documentary’s significance extends beyond the mechanics of fraud. She sees the cases as revealing how embedded sexism and expectations around marriage can shape women’s self-perception and choices. That is Ramnath’s interpretation of the series, not a finding about all Indian women.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The distinction matters: deception is the immediate harm, while social pressure is part of the surrounding context. The British Board of Film Classification notes that the episodes discuss cultural pressure to marry and colorism in marriage preferences. Those are specific issues raised in the programme, rather than evidence about their prevalence across India.
What works, and where does it fall short?
Ramnath praises the series for treating the women’s experiences with empathy and seriousness. Its true-crime frame gives the individual accounts room to register as more than a catalogue of scams, while the broader social lens invites viewers to consider the conditions in which marriage can become a source of pressure.

Her reservation is that the documentary does not dig as deeply into those larger questions as it might. The result, in this reading, is a thoughtful account that opens up questions about sexism, agency, and marriage expectations without fully developing them. Viewers looking for a comprehensive analysis of matrimonial fraud or Indian marriage culture should not mistake five cases for one.
