Weapons prequel Gladys is scheduled for a theatrical release on September 8, 2028, and director Zach Cregger says Amy Madigan will reprise her role as Aunt Gladys. The project was reported after Madigan won the 2026 supporting-actress Oscar, but the available announcements do not establish that her win caused the film to be greenlit.
What is the Weapons prequel Gladys about?
Gladys is the working title reported for a prequel focused on Aunt Gladys, the character Madigan plays in Weapons. Cregger has described the film as a character study about who Gladys was before the events of Weapons and how she became the person audiences meet in the film.
In a September 2026 interview with Men’s Health, Cregger said: “It’s a character study. It’s like, ‘Who was Gladys before she became that and how did she become that?’” In July, he told TheWrap there was “an amazing story to be told about where Gladys comes from and how she became what we know her as.”
What is the release date?
New Line has scheduled Gladys for theatrical release on September 8, 2028. Cregger announced the date at CinemaCon in April 2026, according to TheWrap. It is a planned date, not a guarantee; studio release schedules can change.

Will Amy Madigan return as Aunt Gladys?
Cregger said Madigan would return in the role, ruling out a younger actor playing Gladys in the prequel. “It would be Amy. I’m not going to do a Young Gladys. It would be Amy,” he told Men’s Health in September 2026. This confirms his stated casting intention; it is not a full cast announcement.
How the prequel followed Madigan’s Oscar win
Madigan won the Academy Award for Actress in a Supporting Role for Weapons at the 98th Oscars on March 15, 2026, according to the Academy’s official ceremony record. TheWrap reported the prequel and its writing team on April 1, 2026, after the ceremony. That sequence does not, by itself, show that the Oscar win prompted the studio to greenlight the film.
